Bowman achieves promotion in first season as Skipper

The 4th XI travelled the short distance to The Meads the Home Ground of Hare Street and Hormead to play Hertford's 5th XI in their penultimate League match of the season. Skipper Lloyd Bowman kept up his recent run of correct coin toss calls and put Hertford into bat. Matt Giblin and Neil Haslam opened the bowling for Reed and immediately began to exert pressure on the two Hertford openers. Runs were hard to come by and Giblin struck first J. Davis giving a catch to Paul Garrott (23-1), Giblin took the wicket of the Hertford Skipper S. Dawson in the same over with no addition to the score. At the other end Haslam bowled his medium pace inswingers and leg cutters passing the bat regularly and was unlucky not to take a couple of wickets as two lofted shots cleared both mid on and mid off. Giblin ended his spell with 9-2-23-2 and Haslam 9-4-15-0, equivalent to maybe a two wicket haul considering how the game was progressing at 41 for 2 off 18 overs. Ollie Mansfield replaced Giblin and Ian Roberts replaced Haslam. Roberts bowled Stemp on the stroke of the drinks break for just 4, 51 for 3 in the 21st over. Mansfield took the wicket of N.Osborne for a duck soon after the resumption, Giblin taking the catch at mid on and Hertford were wobbling at 53 for 4. H.Sewell now came to the crease and together with opener C Ives tried to rebuild the Hertford innings. Sewell struck the ball firmly of both bowlers and made full use of the short square boundaries on both sides of the pitch. They increased the run rate and within six overs had brought up the [...]

Another convincing win for the 1st XI

The 1st XI made it 4 wins in 5 games and moved into 3rd place in the Herts Championship with another convincing win this time over previously 3rd placed Hoddesdon. On a green-ish wicket due to the heavy rain of the previous two days Reed won the toss and elected to bowl. Hoddesdon got off to a decent start though with Hertfordshire batsman Rob Walters looking in good form. However when Jack Tidey (8-2-27) again made an important breakthrough dismissing Walters for 25 the run rate began to slow. However, the home side continued to build and at 102-4 off 29 overs largely thanks to 41 from Leat they had a reasonable platform on a tricky wicket. Alex Mutucumarana (10-1-29) and Toby Fynn (10-0-39) bowled decent spells during this period for Reed. The introduction of spinners Tom Greaves (8-2-39), Phil Lill (10-3-21) and Reece Fitzgerald (4-0-17) then put Reed on top reducing the home side to 144-7 off 42 overs. Lill returning particularly impressive figures. Although a recovery took place to 185-8 in 50 overs a run rate of under 4 runs per over was good news for the Reed run chase. Reeds reply got off to another solid start as James and Will Heslam got through a tricky new ball period to take the score to 35-0 after 8 overs. Although Will Heslam (10) then went looking to score, this brought Greaves to the crease and he immediately looked to punish anything loose as Hoddesdon turned to spin but with a little less control than Reed’s and the powerful Greaves (48) supported by Heslam (33) took Reed along to 101-1 off 22 overs to look well on course for victory. Although Heslam and Greaves then [...]

Brave 4th XI fall to first home defeat of the season

Reed 4s entertained second placed Harpenden 6s in their last home league fixture of 2015. Winning the toss, Skipper Lloyd Bowman had no qualms in inserting the opposition on a green pitch at the Freman Oval. Matt Yates opened the bowling at the Reed End but was promptly dispatched for three boundaries by Ivans. However, the positive start was cut short as Neil Haslam, opening from the Buntingford End bowled Bolton off his pads for a duck, 12 for 1. Ivans and Callender then began to build a sensible partnership. Yates finished with credible figures of 6-0-29-0, despite the indifferent first over and gave way to Steve Hughes. Meanwhile Haslam was continuing to bowl tight lines with genuine inswing and away movement of the pitch and passed the bat with regularity. The score had reached 59 when Callender spooned an easy catch to the safe hands of Martin Johnson at cover point off the nagging bowling off Hughes (7-1-21-2). Haslam finished his spell in the next over by clean bowling Ivans for 26 with a ball that swung in late, 63 for 3. Haslam ended his spell with figures of 9-2-26-2, to makeway for Mas Naeem (5-0-37-0) whose spin offered two early chances that Reed failed to take. Washington and Byrne set about rebuilding the Harpenden innings and the pair put on 74 for the fourth wicket before Alan Ward (8-2-33-4) trapped Byrne LBW for 49, 137 for 4. Four runs later Washington nibbled at an away swinger from Ward to be caught behind by Chris West for 28. At 141 for 5 off of 34 Overs, Reed were very much on top. Jones soon followed caught by Naeem to give Ward his third wicket. [...]

Phil fills his boots with maiden century for club

Phil Lill Reed's oversees player from New Zealand- made it his day with an outstanding all round performance that saw him take 3 wickets and making his maiden hundred for Reed. Reed were hosting their annual rivals and friends Aston and having lost the toss were asked to field first. Aston captain Falder opened the batting and with Hollis looked perfectly comfortable in making a solid platform until Graham Stuart (8-1-27-1) bowled Hollis. First change bowler George Garrott (5-1-18-1) got into the action taking a wicket with his first ball. Meanwhile, replacing Graham Stuart, Sam Rice initially struggled as Falder made 62, but eventually got things going finishing with 3 wickets. Reed captain Marcus J.E. Baker took the wicket of his opposite number and that of another for just 16 as he and Phil Lill (3-27) bowled out the final few overs. Reed restricted Aston to 185 with credit going to Ben Moody who gave another solid performance behind the stumps. In the second innings Phil Lill, opening with Paul Garrott, took to things with ease putting on 71 for the first wicket. Paul Garrott, who had played the supporting role to Lill, was lost for 17 but his son George replaced him and quickly out scored him some brutal hitting of his own making 18. With runs still to be made, Phil Lill found yet another useful partner in the form of Ben Moody who rotated the strike excellently. Lill’s clean hitting was at no point hindered and he made his maiden century for Reed before retiring. Ben Moody then put away a few boundaries as he took his side closer to victory. He finished on 30 not out as Reed won by 7 [...]

1st XI convincing win over Flitwick

The 1st XI made it 3 wins in 4 matches with a hard fought but convincing win over close league rivals Flitwick. Flitwick won the toss and elected to bat on a warm sunny day at the green. Jack Tidey made an important early breakthrough for Reed by clean bowling the dangerous Jimmy Hart for 2. However, Tidey made a more crucial breakthrough later on producing a brute of a delivery to also clean bowl prolific Bedfordshire batsman George Thurstance (35) who had started in ominous form. This left the game well balanced with the visitors 60-2 off 13 overs. During this period of the game Reed turned to their reliable spin triplet of Tom Greaves, Phil Lill and Reece Fitzgerald who all bowled with good control. Unfortunately for Reed though a 5th wicket partnership between Russell (89) and Beds all-rounder Jake Higginbotham (30) put the visitors in a decent position at 177-4 with 15 overs to go. However some crucial breakthroughs from Greaves (18-2-71) and the once again impressive Fitzgerald (12-2-24) got Reed firmly back into the game with the visitors eventually ending their innings on 221-8 off 60 overs. In reply Reed got off to an excellent start with Will Heslam particularly looking in fine form following his 82 the week before. The home side raced to another 100 opening stand before Will Heslam was unfortunately out for an excellent 56 off 58 balls. This set back could have changed the course of the game but James Heslam and Tom Greaves steadied the ship and as Heslam went past 50 he accelerated as the pair put on another fine century stand. Despite an excellent spell by Thurstance keeping Flitwick in the game once he [...]

Veterans in the runs as 4th XI extend their lead at the top

Reed 4s entertained Hatfield Hyde 3s at The Freman Oval last Saturday in their penultimate Home League fixture of the season. Hatfield Hyde won the toss and elected to bat. Reed opened the bowling with Matt Giblin (9-2-23-1) and Jack Childs (7-0-48-0) &, the Hatfield Hyde openers set off quickly punishing any lose deliveries. The score had reached 27 before Giblin bowled Moorehouse for 15 with a ball that moved in. After twice being dropped early in his innings, the Hatfield Hyde skipper Johnson continued to accumulate runs partnered by Davies. Skipper Lloyd Bowman then brought Neil Haslam and Toby Emes into the attack and both immediate began to put pressure on the batsmen with accurate bowling and the runs began to dry up. With the score on 96-1, Davies tried one adventurous shot too many off of Emes and was bowled for 27. At the other end Haslam was bowling a tight line and length and the earlier free flowing batting of Hatfield Hyde was beginning to dry up. Skipper Johnson then suffered a pulled leg muscle attempting a quick single and this proved a turning point for the Reed bowlers. Haslam bowled him a short time later with an inswinging ball for 80, 140 for 3. Emes (10-0-36-2) continued to bamboozle the batsman and then took his second wicket as Bill Mansfield took a good catch in the deep, 152 for 4 and in the next over Whitton spooned a catch to Matt Giblin at mid-on off of Haslam (11-1-35-2) with no addition and Reed were now on top. Singh and Malik threatened a mini revival but Malik fell to Martin Johnson (4-0-26-2) the score was now 179 for 6. Haslam gave way [...]

Great win for 3rd XI

Reed 3rds won the toss against Northwood and opted to bowl. Owen Hughes(6-3-12-1) picked up a wicket in his first over and then Michael Robertson (8-2-17-4) picked up two leaving Northwood 30 for 3 after 8 overs. Ian Roberts (9-2-34-2) then chipped in with two wickets while Robertson claimed another two leaving Northwood 74 for seven after 24 overs. Josh Connolly (3-0-14-1) and Kallum Ward (4-0-8-2) then cleaned up the tail, leaving Northwood all out for 91. In reply, Reed began strongly with Peter Baker (40) and Richard Barlow (24) putting on an opening stand of 68 in 16 overs, but five wickets fell quickly until Robertson (8no) and George Garrott (6no) saw them over the line safely. 94 for 5 off 21 overs. Reed 30 points Northwood Town 2nds 5 points.

Reed 1st XI unfortunate in close defeat

Reed 1st XI were unfortunate not to defeat Herts Championship leaders Totteridge Milhillians on Saturday in a closely fought encounter. Reed won the toss and elected to chase. On a Totteridge Milhillians track that tends to play better than opposing teams might expect and a lightening outfield and short boundaries it was no surprise Totteridge’s fine batting line up got off to a good start. Overseas player Hayden Butterworth (121) and Chris Mason (51) reached 116-0 although they were kept down in run rate particularly once spinners Tom Greaves (18-2-81) and Reece Fitzgerald (11-0-41) came on and bowled very well. During this period Reed suffered a first bit of misfortune when Butterworth received the benefit of the doubt over a possible catch in the gully off the bowling of Jack Tidey (10-1-54) when on 16. Greaves managed to deservedly take two wickets before lunch leaving the home side 134-2 off 34 overs. Unfortunately after lunch Totteridge Milhillians through Butterworth and ex-Derbyshire Steve Selwood (51) kicked on well and reached 226-2 off 47 overs and a big score looked probable. However the determined Reed bowling attack who had bowled pretty well all afternoon had other ideas. Phil Lill (9-3-42) and wicket keeper / off break sensation Sean Tidey (5-3-26) came on and got a couple of crucial breakthroughs which then exposed the Totteridge Milhillians lower middle order who were unable to perform to the level of the top order and the home side collapsed to 264 all out in 58 overs. This left Reed in a decent position to challenge the total on a free scoring ground, although knowing it would be tricky against the Totteridge spin attack including ex-England captain John Emburey and Butterworth. James [...]

Reed 1st XI team effort in superb victory

Reed 1st XI secured an excellent win versus high-flying Botany Bay on Saturday at the Green. After the significant rainfall the day before the game Reed captain Heslam chose to put in the visitors despite the threat of some prolific batsman in the Botany Bay ranks. This strength soon became apparent as ex-Northants Ben Howgego started in ominous form on a wicket which seemed to have responded well to being covered throughout the previous days bad weather. Although Kasey Harris (19) and Dan Kastelik (7) went relatively cheaply to Tom Greaves (1-46) and Reece Fitzgerald (1-22) well caught by Chris Jackson and Will Heslam, the classy Howgego had put the visitors in control of the game by lunch at 154-2 off 34 overs. Reed knew they needed to get through the visitors quickly after lunch and that they did in fantastic style. Jack Tidey (3-51) opened the door by removing Howgego for a superb 101 and then he and Phil Lill (3-39) ripped through the Botany Bay middle order reducing them to 175-7 off 41 overs, an incredible turnaround. Reed eventually took the last 3 wickets to leave the bay all out for 203 in the 53rd over, with Fynn (2-30) returning to finish things off nicely. Despite the turnaround of the game situation Reed knew they would need to bat well to win the game against a testing Bay attack. They got off to a slow but steady start before 3 quick wickets left the home side in trouble at 31-3 with Will Heslam (19) the only batsman to reach double figures at this stage. However, the 4th wicket partnership proved crucial as the ever reliable Chris Jackson and Mitchell Cooper steadied the ship [...]

Lankester stands up to see side home, Reed move into first place

Reed Seconds followed up their one-sided victory against Wheathampstead last week with another dominant display, this time against Ickleford. Playing away, Reed were pleasantly surprised to be asked to bowl first on a pitch with noticeable water damage from Fridays daylong downpour. After some attacking shots Reed picked up their first wicket thanks to a catch at point by Jack Caine from the bowling of Tom Walsingham. Walsingham (7-1-22-1) would continue to put down the ball at pace and managed to beat the bat on several occasions putting real pressure on the in coming batsmen. Peter Tidey at the other end meanwhile was producing all kinds of variable bounce and ended up taking 3 superb wickets for 20. With this early pressure from the openers and Reeds usual high standards in the field Ickleford were in real trouble. They found no let up from the change bowlers as Karl Ward (12-5-12-3), Jack Caine (1.2-0-5-1) and Ian Osbourne (5-0-10-2) all chipped in. Reed were in a solid position at the start of the second innings with a drying pitch and a paltry 82 to chase down. It was still hard going however, as Reed captain Phil Frenay and Richard Johnson got things going. Ickleford had little other option but to attack and applied pressure well. They managed to pick themselves up four wickets, as Reed feared an embarrassing collapse. However after Johnson’s 21 and 12 from Osbourne young Rob Lankester (39*) carried the burden of getting his side over the line showing supreme composure throughout. He finished things in style with a ramp shot to make the winning runs. Report by MJEB.
