It’s a case of Reed it and weep for Flitwick

Reed entertained Flitwick in their season opener at The Green. In a new league, with a new format and stronger opposition, Reed knew that this was not going to be easy. Having won the toss, Reed Skipper James Heslam decided to ask Flitwick to bat on a good early season wicket. Toby Fynn, returning to league cricket after a broken ankle ended his season last year, opened the bowling down the hill. Fynn bowled with good line and length, moving the ball and beating the bat frequently. Fynn (10-3-28-1) got his reward when he bowled S.Davies for a very painful 1. Jack Tidey (9-0-28-1) fresh from getting the cast off of his broken wrist on Monday took the new ball up the hill and was troubling the batsmen with the movement off the pitch. This showed as he picked up the wicket of T.Russell for 20 after a leading edge to cover. Flitwick didn’t make great use of their batting power play and needed to add some acceleration into their innings. They looked to target the spin of Tom Greaves, which did not go to plan. Greaves picked up the wicket of G.Thurstance (19) and H. Thurstance (16) in the same over leaving the visitors at 64-4. This soon became 67-5 as Mitchell Cooper (10-2-31-2) picked up the wicket of D.Moxon for a duck. Greaves (10-2-30-3) struck again soon after removing Flitwick’s overseas player Ricky Joseph for the 3rd time in 3 meetings for the pair, 77-6. H. Mushtaq offered some resistance in the number 7 role. He hit 44 from 54 balls and took his side over the 140 mark. Division 8 will be harder

Reed’s Third XI made their debut in Division 8 of the Herts League in their steady upward progression from beginning in Division 13 in 2006. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a wake-up call as their opponents on Saturday were the vastly more experienced Bushey 2nd XI. With a wicket after just two deliveries, Taimoor Maqsood then maintained a disciplined line and length to return figures of 7 for 26 from 11 overs and never allowing Reed to dominate. Opener Rob Willoughby, (27), and Captain, John Kershaw, (25), combined for a fourth wicket partnership of 39, but a disappointing 80 all-out was never going to be sufficient. The innings had lasted just 24 overs. However, fast scoring was not a feature of Bushey’s innings either as they used-up 20 overs before overhauling their target. George Garrott took the only Bushey wicket to fall, but Owen Hughes, from Reed’s Under 15 Colts, was most impressive by conceding just 12 runs from 7 overs with seam-up opening bowling. In a short spell too, fellow Colt Toby Emes debuted his leg-break bowling showing a glimpse of wicket-taking potential in the future. Although early days, Reed Thirds will need to strengthen their resolve to compete in this higher division.

Reed 2nd XI begin life back in Division 6 with a win

Following their promotion at the first attempt last season, Reed IIs began life back in Herts League Division 6 with a good win in what proved to be a very low scoring game. Marcus Martin’s men travelled to Old Finchleians on Saturday missing 6 of the regular players who helped them gain promotion and the league title last season and upon losing the toss, Reed were asked to bat on what looked a difficult track. Things stated badly for Reed as they lost early wickets, including captain and talisman Marcus Martin cheaply, as variable bounce in the wicket caused a number of soft looking dismissals. However Richard Johnson (27) Marcus Baker (21) and Karl Ward (43) steadied the ship and began to take Reed towards three figures. It was only when Johnson was pinned LBW to a ball that hardly got above ankle height and Baker also perished did things start to go wrong for Reed, as their departures led to a flurry of wickets. Ward continued to bat well however, and was ably supported by debutant Reece Fitzgerald. When Ward did eventually lose his wicket the end was nigh for Reed and although Fitzgerald (25 Not Out) continued unperturbed by the demons in the pitch, the Reed tail didn’t last long and they were all out for 133. Although 133 looked a low score, Reed knew that they were in with a chance if they bowled and caught well, especially given that the pitch was still misbehaving. Baker scores first ton of the season

For Reed it proved a good victory in their first home Sunday game of the season. Hosting, for the first time in several seasons, Hare Street and Hormead always promised to be a lively and entertaining encounter as several players in their side play for Reed on Saturdays. The competitive but friendly nature of the game made for an enjoyable game and the perfect way to kick of Sundays at The Green. Hosting skipper Marcus J.E. Baker won the toss and decided to bat first. He was soon at the crease after the fall of an early wicket. Karl Ward and Baker performed well in putting the bad balls away and keeping the good ones out. They ran well between the wickets and each brought up their half centuries by drinks, having put on 111 together. The interval although brief was enough to break Ward’s concentration as he was caught in the twenty first over for 60. Coming in at number 4 was 16 year old Jack Caine who had the added pressure of playing against his brother, a pressure which he dealt with great maturity. Instead of falling into the trap of trying to hit out he maintained his composure and played himself in before scoring freely with some superb shot selection. Meanwhile, Baker continued at the same tempo and never really looked in too much trouble and reached three figures with a well played pull shot. Baker then retired with still eight overs left to be faced. Will Heslam made a brief cameo of 22 before Peter G. Baker supported Caine as the talented youngster reached 50.
