Foxton Final

Reed proved too strong for a good Foxton side to win the Keatley Cup for the ninth time in 10 years.Reed Captain Stuart Smith won the toss and put Foxton into bat. This decision looked to have backfired as Foxton openers Gareth Roots (10) and Lawrence Farnham (20) took the score to 30-0 off 3 overs. However, Reed then took control with Man of the Match Jack Tidey (4-11) bowling Roots and Farnham in the same over. In Tidey's next over Stuart Smith ran out Adam Webster then caught Tom Stone next ball, Tidey then took a 3rd wicket in 3 balls by bowling Lionel Griffin. At 38-5 the game was as good as over, but there was still time for Tom Greaves (3-9) to bag a hatrick leaving Foxton all out for 48.Reed's run chase started poorly with both Smith and Greaves going cheaply, but 16 from James Heslam and 18 not out from Karl Ward saw Reed home with 7 overs to spare. This years competition included Reed, Foxton, Buntingford, Cokenach and Royston. If any other clubs are interested in playing next year then they should contact Richard Temple at Royston Cricket Club

2012 Hon. Secretary’s Report

As 2011 rolled gently into 2012 we had little idea that 2012 was to prove to be an epic season for our Club, one with features and highlights that will quite possibly never be matched again! Novembers AGM 2011 saw a number of changes in the Clubs playing hierarchy with Rob Willoughby taking on the leadership of the Saturday 4th Xl, Tom Greaves the Sunday 1st Xl and Marcus Baker the Sunday 2nd Xl. Stuart Smith took over as Midweek Captain and also provided a welcome younger influx to the RCC General Committee. Mark King undertook the role of Coaching Co-ordinator, but an embarrassing rules related restriction on RCCGC numbers led to stalwart and much respected Committee Members Graham Smith and Paul Garrott withdrawing their nominations to stand for 2012, and thereby taking at least one years rest on the sidelines. After a successful Annual Dinner and Awards Evening at The Jester Hotel in Odsey we looked forward with the usual eager anticipation to the new playing season. This summer we welcomed Alex Kelly as a new member who required registration as an overseas player from Australia. Alex played as an effective bowler in both the 1st and 2nd Xl’s at various stages of the season and was a vociferous and lively social member and supporter of the Club throughout the Village Cup campaign! Of the 2011 retirees and injured players Simon Jackson returned for a few notable and successful late season appearances in both the 1st and 2nd Xl’s, whilst Will Clark began to play again with conspicuous all round success for the 2nd Xl. Regrettably Graham Wilson never reappeared, a big loss to the Club as his much improved bowling had been a [...]

Reed Lift National Village Cup

After winning their Saracens Hertfordshire League Division 2 title with a win at Dunstable on Saturday Reed moved on to play at Lords Cricket Ground in the 2012 Final of the Yorkshire Tea National Village Cup against 4 times finalists, and twice winners, Woodhouse Grange CC from near York in North Yorkshire. No Hertfordshire side had previously won the coveted National Village Cup, which is organised by The Cricketer Magazine and has been keenly contested since 1972. 292 sides entered this years competition so competition had been intense with the reward of playing the Final at Lords complete with full Lords match facilities. After being dropped off by their coach from the hotel at the legendary Grace Gate entrance, Reed were awarded the privilege of occupying the “Home” Lords No 1 Changing Room, usually used by England in Test Matches and Middlesex for County matches. The weather was truly glorious, hot and sunny with not a cloud in the sky, as the newly commissioned Reed Club Flag was raised over their changing room and a sizeable crowd, which eventually swelled to almost 4,000, filtered into the ground for the 11.00am start. A brass band played behind the pavilion whilst the full range of Lords match facilities were operated - Big Screen TV, Electronic Scoreboard, and MC announcements by the regular Lords Test match announcer. The Reed side was unchanged from their semi-final, meaning that once again they fielded 10 ex Club Colts in their 11-man team, a truly remarkable proportion especially at the level that they now play, and in such a prestigious competition. Even the 12th man, 16 year old Tom Walsingham, was an ex Colt. The average age of the Reed side is [...]
