Leverstock Green

Reed played host to table toppers Leverstock Green on Saturday and convincingly came away with all 30 points. Having won the toss, James Heslam put the visitors into bat, and with Reed missing opening bowler Tom Walsingham through injury it was up to Lee Johnson and Jack Tidey to make the early breakthroughs. It was the latter who took the first of the Leverstock Green openers clinging on to a good caught and bowled with the score on just 4. The following over the ever reliable Lee Johnson picked up his first of six wickets in a fine spell of pace bowling. Johnson caused concerns all round for Leverstock's batsmen, in particular overseas kingpin Alex King, before forcing a shot which saw the Aussie play-onto his stumps. At 27-3 and with the big run scorer out, Leverstock looked somewhat depleted, and lacking ideas. Coupled with some fine bowling from Johnson (6-36), Tidey (2-26) and then latterly Mitchell Cooper(1-10), Reed wrapped up the innings to complete an all round excellent performance in the field which saw the visitors all out for 72.In reply the result was never in doubt and Reed's openers James and William Heslam got off to a good start before Heslam jnr (9) was the first of two Reed wickets to fall. Chris Jackson and James Heslam then edged towards victory before Heslam (38) was out to a fine caught and bowled by Luke Roberts. Jackson (18*) and Will Dobson (7*) then saw off the winning runs to see Reed take all 30 points and to move in 2nd position in the league.

Kings Langley II

Reed’s 2nd XI’s season went from bad to worse with yet another batting collapse. Skipper Baz Curtis won the toss and had no hesitation putting in the visitors on a damp wicket. Kings Langley had reached 11 before Rupert Martin had Pinchin caught at mid off. He struck again 6 runs later leaving visitors 17-2. Alex Kelly replaced Tom Walsingham and Peter Tidey replaced Martin and suddenly Reed took a strangle hold. Kelly bowled a tight line and along with Tidey kept the runs to a minimum. Tidey had Smith run out backing up and Kelly chipped in with 2 well deserved wickets. All of a sudden it was 33-6. Scanbrook was the only batsman to look comfortable and he struck some lust blows and moved the strike around well as his partners came and went.Tidey picked up two more wickets leaving Kings Langley 9 down for 87. 21 was added for the last wicket before Walsingham bowled Burnell. Scanbrook was left 49 not out.Reed made a decent start in reply. Roddi Liebenberg and Baz Curtis put on 22 for the first wicket. Liebenberg being removed for 13. Curtis fell for the same total when the score was 31. At 35-3 the game looked evenly poised. Phil Freney and Will Clarke looked to have turned the game back in Reed’s favour putting on 27 before Freney went for 11. Still at 62-4 Reed felt like one more good partnership would see them home. If only that had happened. A mixture of excellent catching and sharp fielding saw the home side collapse from 62-4 to 68-8. A late charge from Peter Tidey who topped scored with 17 wasn’t enough as Shandy came back into the attack [...]

Ickleford II

Reed’s 2nd XI were in desperate need of 30 points to help them in the relegation fight. They lost the toss on a sweltering day at Ickleford. The home side decided to bat on what looked like a decent batting track. Tom Walsingham bowled a tight open spell conceding just 15 runs from his 6 over. Senior partner Peter Tidey was also keeping things tight from the other end. The bowling was so tight that the run rate was just over 2 an over. Toby Fynn replaced Walsingham and made the break through Reed needed. Tidey soon got into the action from the other end picking up 3 quick wickets.Alex Kelly then got in to the action. Ickleford decided it was time to break the shackles and Kelly was the man to attack. His first 2 balls went flying to the boundary, but his 3rd was well held by Richard Barlow behind the stumps and Ickleford were 5 down. Kelly wasn’t done. He took the remaining 5 wickets and finished with 6-10. Ickleford were left 69 all out. After a fine tea, Reed were left to knock off the 70 runs required. In past season this would have been no problem, but this season low totals have been a problem. Baz Curtis and Richard Johnson opened for the visitors and were soon in their stride. They had reached 50 in just 6 overs as they found the boundary on regular occasions. Johnson in particular was in fine form. He hit 10 boundaries in his 41 before being softly caught and bowled. Curtis was removed with 8 runs left. Will Clarke also fell, but Reed managed to get over the line and won by 7 wickets and [...]

Hoddesdon II

Reed’s 2nd XI travelled to Hoddesdon for their latest league match. Water had seeped under the covers and delayed the start. Reed lost the toss and were unsurprising put into bat. Openers Baz Curtis and Fergus Martin made slow, but steady progress against a good opening spell from Burroughs and Sturdy. The pair put on the first 50 opening partnership of the season before Curtis was caught at mid wicket for 34 in the 19th over.Martin was unlucky to play on off the bowling of Gandon and when Barlow went soon after Reed were in all sorts of trouble. Will Clarke and Matt Bowles put on 29 for the 4th wicket. Bowles seemed to be getting back in the groove after his injury lay off before he feathered a catch behind. This brought in Marcus Martin who upped the run rate with Clarke. Clarke managing to hit his first ever 6 on the way to 26, but could so easily have been 32 if he hadn’t missed the long hop and been bowled. Martin’s brisk 31 got Reed into the batting points apply assisted by Marcus Baker. With just 4 overs left Reed were 156-6 and the next batting points 14 runs away. Baker decided this was doable and more than that got Reed to the next batting point as well. With some fine striking and taking advantage of the short boundary he smashed 40 not out to leave Reed 185-6 off their 50 overs. The wicket had now dried thanks to the strong wind and it was going to take some accurate bowling to make 186 needed competitive. Tom Wallsingham opened into the gale and bowled very well, but it was his new ball partner [...]

Letchworth II

On Saturday Reed entertained Letchworth ll at The Green. Reed bowled first on what looked to be a decent track. Letchworth got off to a steady start with openers Wight and Mullen batting sensibly but Reed's opening bowlers Lee Johnson (13-4-56-1) and Jack Tidey (9-3-19-1) remained patient and were rewarded when Tidey picked up the wicket of Wight (11) , bowled, going for one pull shot too many. Johnson then picked up the wicket of Mullen Caught Behind by Sean Tidey for a slow 26. At 48-2, Walsh and March came together and looked to make use of the platform the openers had made. They did just this, respecting the good ball and punishing the bad. The run rate increase and Letchworth looked in control until Walsh holed out in the deep on 27 off the bowling of Ed Garrott (11-0-55-1). Spinner Tom Greaves got in the act in the latter stages of the innings for Reed picking up the wickets of March (79), Maxford Pipe (57) and Gillham (1) to finish with figures of (17-1-53-3). This left Letchworth on 214-6 off their 53 overs. In reply, Reed's opening pair of James and William Heslam got off to a solid start and reached 39 before Will Heslam was caught for 12 (3x4s). Tom Greaves came to the crease looking to continue his recent good form with the bat and did just this. He and James Heslam found the boundary regularly. The pair added 81 for the second wicket before skipper Heslam was Bowled by Maxford Pipe for 66 (12x4s, 1x6s). At 120-2, Reed looked in command but still had work to do when the reliable Chris Jackson strode out to the wicket. Jackson and Greaves looked [...]

Knebworth Park II

Reed continued their push for promotion with a convincing 160 Win over Knebworth Park II on Saturday, taking them top of the league with three games remaining.Missing several keys players due to other commitments, Reed demonstrated their strength in depth by utilising their young squad but also being able to call upon experienced wicket keeper Simon Jackson to replace young Sean Tidey, making his first appearance for 2 years. On a swealtry summer day, skipper James Heslam lost the toss and surprisingly was asked to have a bat. Reed lost the early wicket of Will Heslam, however this gave Tom Greaves (38) the opportunity to demonstrate his quality, punching the ball to all corners of the ground. At the other end, James Heslam was batting well and between the pair they put on 77 for 2nd wicket. When Greaves fell lbw to Patel, Reed were in a solid position to build on from, and this they did with the help of Heslam and Chris Jackson. Heslam however fell for a well worked 61 and it was up to Stuart Smith and Chris Jackson to build the next passage of play. Smith was particularly destructive of the bad ball and was soon racing away to a quick fire 50. With Reed looking for a declaration and Smith looking for his century he unfortunately drove one back at Patel who took a good catch leaving Smith on 82 for an excellent counter destructive innings. Reed lost one further wicket before an early declaration at 261, with Jackson on 32 and Mitchell Cooper on 11 In reply, Reed got off to an excellent start with paceman Lee Johnson picking up 3 early wickets in a fine spell of pace [...]

Flitwick II

Reed’s poor form with the bat again cost the 2nd XI dear. Winning the toss and deciding to bat first seemed the obviously thing to do when the home skipper won the toss. The wicket looked a good batting surface. Openers Bas Curtis and Fergus Martin took their time and put the bad ball away with aplomb. Martin in particular looked in good nick. Curtis was the first to go when he stopped on a drive and was caught at point. A decent opening stand of 46 seemed to have set the foundation for a decent total. Unfortunately that became 46-2 the very next ball when Richard Johnson was removed. Ricahrd Barlow and Martin moved the score along to 79 before Barlow was caught. Twenty Eight overs still remained with wickets in hand.Wigfield has been brought in to the attack and with some good flight he tempted Martin to try and hit over the top only to be caught at mid-off. 94-4 soon became 136-8. Reed scored 40 runs in 12 overs losing those 4 wickets. Roddi Liebenberg and Ben Bowles both got in, but couldn’t get the big score Reed now needed. Marcus Baker struck a lusty 21 before being the last man out for 21. Reed were all out for 161.The pitched held no dangers so Reed need to bowl tightly. Nicklin had other plans and with some lusty blows looked to take the game away from Reed. He seemed to take a liking to Alex Kelly’s bowling, but Kelly had the final say when he bowled Nicklin for 14 with the score on 19. Kelly struck twice when the total had reached 37 and Reed saw a chink on light. The Flitwick [...]

Flamstead

Reed's 2nd XI lacklustre season ended with a lacklustre display. Reed won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. Baz Curtis and Richard Johnson made a great start finding the boundary regular. It was a good challenge between bat and ball. Rogers was finding some swing and Inman was generating some good pace. Both openers looks settled and had reached 56 before Johnson was bowled for 22 by Inman. Five runs later her struck again removing Curtis in the same manor for 37. The next 12 overs summed up the 2nd XI Reed's season as they went from 56-0 to 96-5. 200 runs was vital for the home side if they were to stave off relegation and at this point it didn't look good. Matt Bowles looked in fine touch, but was removed by Ridley and Reed were 115-7. Marcus Baker struck a quick 10. Simon Jackson wasn't scoring at a rapid rate, but his experience told him a partnership was required. He helped the tail to put on a vital 39 runs. He and Tom Walsingham added 29 for the last wicket with Walsingham scoring 21 not out. Reed's 165 all out didn't give them the 10 points they needed so now wickets were vital. Reed's opening attack of Kallum Ward and Tom Walsingham bowled well early on, but openers Taylor and Clark knew time was on their side. Walsingham removed Taylor for 21, but by now Clark was in full flow. He and Blunt saw Flamstead to 154 without any really alarms, but Walsingham struck again and Johnson removed Clark for 71.  Reed's relegation was confirmed not soon after as Flamstead knocked off the last 12 runs. Flamstead were confirmed as champions soon after [...]

Holtwhites Trinibis

Reed maintained their push for promotion with a nail biting 1 wicket win over Holtwhites Trinibis on Saturday. Chasing 158 to win, Reed found themselves requiring 12 runs with just one wicket remaining, but the calm heads of Chris Jackson and Lee Johnson held their nerve and saw home the win which puts Reed into 3th position and in close contention with the leading pack. Earlier on in the day, and having won the toss, the visitor's top order batted well putting themselves into a strong position until a major collapse saw them lose their last 6 wickets for 27 runs. It was the Reed spin twins of Tom Greaves and Ed Garrott who picked up 4 valuable wickets a piece which succumbed Holwhites to 157 all out.In reply, the visitors set about making up for their earlier collapse by bowling an excellent line and length throughout and rotating their bowlers well, which made it difficult for Reed to gather any kind of momentum. From a strong position of 80-3, and faced with some tight bowling Reed lost further wickets putting the game closely in the balance. The ever reliable Chris Jackson (40 no) remained constant throughout his innings, and when Marcus Martin came to the crease the pair looked like they would easily knock off the total. However the loss of Martin (23), followed by Garrott and the Tidey brothers left Jackson and Lee Johnson requiring 12 runs to win with no wickets remaining. Johnson held guard impeccably, whilst Jackson edged towards the total, knocking off the winning runs to end an exciting game which could have gone either way.

Hemel Hempstead II

Reed 1st Xl recorded their 4th win in 6 matches this season and roared back to the top of their league table establishing a 10 point lead over nearest challengers Dunstable Town.Playing away at Hemel Hempstead skipper James Heslam won the toss and invited Hemel to bat first on a damp wicket and slow outfield. Hemel made steady if slow progress and after almost 30 overs had progressed to only 88 for no wicket in the face of tight bowling from Lee Johnson 14 Overs 0 – 33, Jack Tidey 7 Overs 0 – 15 and Mitchell Cooper 7 Overs 0 – 25. The usual tight Reed fielding put the brakes on the Hemel batsmen and the pressure told, and the game changed materially, with the introduction of the Reed spin twins Will Dobson and Tom Greaves. 88 for 0 Wkt became 120 for 6 as Dobson dismissed both openers, Morgan for 53 and Berry for 43. Elbourn went for 13 and then the procession really started with the next 7 batsmen failing to raise double figures. Dobson returned 5 for 34 from his 12 overs and Greaves 4 – 32 from 13 overs. Hemel slumped to only 144 for 9 from their maximum 53 overs as Reed restricted their opportunities to accelerate. In reply Reed opened their innings with brothers James and William Heslam, both products of Reeds prolific Colts Cricket Academy. In fact 8 of the Reed team were former Colts at the Club. The Heslam brothers played solid assured Cricket whilst also scoring at a healthy rate of over 4 an over. The pair took the Reed score to 73 before skipper James fell caught for a typically sound and robust 43. 17 [...]
