Leverstock Green III

With a team filled with youngsters, players returning from University and three old boys the Thirds travelled to Leverstock Green on a fine sunny day.Luckily, the Reed captain chose tails and lost the toss. Even luckier was the fact the host’s captain was unaware that Reed did not have much batting as all of the younger players arrived late in the two cars that got lost, and elected to bat.George Garrott, playing his first game of the season, opened the bowling and bowled with accuracy, returning figures of 12-5-1-16. His performance deserving of more then the one wicket he picked up. At the other end Jack Caine held more than his own and the Leverstock openers found it difficult to get bat on ball let alone pick up runs. Caine finished his two spells with figures of 9–1–2-28. The first change bowlers of Reese Fitzgerald (9-4-2-14) and Matt Naeem (7-1-2-21), kept the pressure on and aided by some excellent fielding, Scot Caine standing out with three superb catches in the covers, Reed had the hosts on 48 for 5. The hosts rallied and a couple of useful stands took them to a total of 137 all out after 48 overs. Reed 10 nil up at tea.On most other weeks, 137 in 52 overs would be extremely possible, sadly it was not to be. The lack of batting was very evident as wickets fell at an alarming rate. At one stage Reed were 11 for 4. Brief fight backs by George Garrott, playing the anchor role, Michael and Maseed Naeem, swinging the bat at every ball, pushed the score along, but at the end Steve Lovegrove was left without any partners on 13 not out, as [...]

Hoddesdon III

Having had the first two league games cancelled due to the weather, the Thirds finally managed to get a game in at Freman College. This was thanks to the immense effort put in by Richard Robertson in preparing the pitch and outfield.Reed were still missing some key players especially in the batting department, Fulk, Barlow, Bowles, Baker and Garrott were either unavailable or had been promoted. However the eleven that did take the field did a splendid job.Winning the toss the Reed captain Maseeh Naeem, had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat on what was a very damp wicket. The Reed opening bowlers Louis Fitzgerald (6-2-1-9) and Kallum Ward (5-0-0-9) bowled tightly and economically and although Fitzgerald made a breakthrough, it was not a quick bowlers wicket. The first change bowlers really did the damage, Ian Roberts, bowled in tandem with young Reece Fitzgerald, and in their 21 overs took 5 wickets for a miserly 31 runs. Roberts finishing with figures of 10-3-3-11 and Fitzgerald 11-3-2-20. Jack Caine (4-2-2-6) and Naeem (2.2-1-2-5) finished off the Hoddesdon tail to leave the visitors on 62 all out after 38.2 overs. Hoddesdon opener Costigam was the only batsman to get into double figures scoring 27 of the visitor’s runs. With a stand in opening pair of Steve Lovegrove and Julian Fynn the Reed reply got off to a positive start and the runs came quickly. However the pitch was still causing problems, Lovegrove was out caught on 12 attempting to clear the infield, quickly followed by Fynn, bowled with one that stayed low. Reed then had a bit of a wobble, from being comfortable at 36 for two, it was suddenly 44 for 4 and Hoddesdon spirits [...]

Bovingdon

This week Reed III's played host to Bovingdon in a mid table clash. Losing the toss Reed bowled first and with Richard Johnson (11.1.43.1) amd Matt Giblin (7.2.13.2) opening the attack Bovingdon were soon in trouble as Giblin bowled both openers cheaply. Stickland (19) and Arnold (42) then put a stand together before the former fell to a catch by Michael Naeem off Ian Roberts (10.5.18.2).Arnold continued to secure one end for Bovingdon but with the introduction of Rhys Fitzgerald a procession of Bovingdon players came and went cheaply. Jack Caine(6.2.14.0)was great support for Fitzgerald who took two wickets in two balls and with catches from Maseeh Maeem and Matt Giblin and a further caught and bowled Rhys finished with figures of 8.4.0.16.5. Johnson came back for a short spell to take his first wicket in two years to wrap up the Bovingdon innings - 121 all out!Richard Johnson and Ben Bowles opened the batting and it soon became clear the total was never enough as both played some excellent drives to register a 50 run opening partnership. Unfortunately Johnson was then bowled for 25 which brought Maseeh Naeem to the crease. The skipper played some lusty shots but very soon lost Ben Bowles as he played on having scored 28. Ian Fulk in his first game of the season played the best shot of the day - a back foot cover drive for four before he too was out LBW for 12. Scott Caine 8 not out and Naeem, not out 43, saw Reed home in just over 25 overs to register a second win of the season.

Berkhamsted II

Playing away to an inform Berkhamstead II's side this weekend Reed took potentially their strongest side of the season to date. Berkhamstead won the toss and elected to field and it soon became clear why as the two opening bowlers set about making scoring difficult on a track that had life and bounce.Richard Barlow and Peter Baker opened with the former surviving a loud caught behind appeal early in the innings before Baker was caught at short midwicket for 4. A procession of batsmen departed courtesy of some poor umpiring and good bowling from Smith. Marcus Martin (4) hit a glorious cover drive to mark his return to cricket but was then given out LBW on a ball everyone bar the umpire and bowler felt he had hit! Ben Bowles (3) played on and Steve Lovegrove (4) was cleaned bowled. At 44 for 4 things did not look good but up stepped George Garrott who together with Barlow began a rescue bid. Barlow went for 25, Maseeh Naeem for 4, Jack Childs for 2 and Rhys Fitzgerald for 0 as the score reached 69 for 8. Garrott and Lewis Fitzgerald (7*) then battled to get the score to 93 for 9 as Garrott finally fell for a valiant 20. Jack Caine was the last to go for 8 but not before he had played the shot of the day - a lofted drive back over the bowler's head for 4. Reed finishing 104 all out.Needing points Reed began well with Garrott (4.1.13.0) and Lewis Fitzgerald (7.1.12.1) making the batsman work for the runs but it was Jack Caine who took the first wicket courtesy of one of Richard Barlow's three catches of the day. Jack [...]

Wormley

Reed 2nd XI struggled again this week. The visitors lost the toss and were put on to bat. The wicket looked like a good one and losing the toss wouldn’t make much difference. Openers Baz Curtis and Ben Bowles made a solid start against some tight bowling. The pair had put on 24 before R. Stevenson struck. Curtis was next to go for 19 with the score on 33. Reed managed only 57 runs by drinks in the 27th over, losing 5 wickets. Marcus Baker and Richard Barlow added promising 30 before Barlow was removed for 6. Things looked brighter when Baker and Alex Kelly started to move the ball around nicely and with some good running put on 37. Baker reached a well deserved 50, but the innings run out of steam and Reed were left 139 all out, one run short of 2 vital batting points.Reed’s bowlers have done well this season and it looked they may deliver again. Tom Walsingham struck in the first over to leave the home side 0-1. Baker and Pepper had other ideas and with some very positive batting raced to 90 before Pepper was removed by Alex Kelly. Rupert Martin had Ward stumped for a duck and it looked like Reed may have a sniff, but Baker reached his 50 before being bowled by Martin for 51. Ryan and Spinks made sure their was no mishaps for the home side and they reached their target with 6 wickets to spare.

Welwyn Garden City III

It was another disappointing display by Reed’s 2nd XI batsmen. They couldn’t provide the skill required to backup another great bowling display. Visitors Welwyn Garden City III won the toss and decided to take the brave decision to bat first on another wet wicket. Willis was trapped LBW for 17 off the bowling off Rupert Martin, but that was the only break through the home side could muster in the first 27 overs. Lewis Fitzgerald bowled extremely well conceding just 7 runs from his 6 overs. It was the introduction of Karl Ward and Peter Tidey that finally saw Reed make some inroads. Ward returning from a lengthy bowling sabbatical removed Emerton who had reached an effortless 52. He then bowled Wells for 22 and all of a sudden the innings had changed. Runs were hard to come by and with Ward being supported well by Tidey only Meyrer could reach double figures. Tidey returned 4-37 from 16.5 overs and Ward 5-29 from his 12. Reed knew it was going to be tough to get the 126 they needed, but overs weren’t a problem it was just a matter of could their brittle batting come through. The answer was no. Taylor bowled Curtis first ball of the innings with a snorter of a ball. Fergus Martin and Ward tried to repair the damage and had made steady progress when Martin was LBW for 6. 25-2 soon became 30-4. Ward was removed for 19, but worse was to come. When the score reached 42-5 Reed lost 4 more wickets for just 10. Rupert Martin and Peter Tidey put up some resistance and entertained the crowd for a while, but Tidey was finally bowled by Taylor to become [...]

St. Margaretsbury II

Reed travelled to St. Margaretsbury on Saturday hoping to put last weeks defeat behind them. Reed’s skipper wasn’t too disappointed when he lost the toss and was asked to field. Opening bowlers Mitchell Cooper and Toby Fynn made good use of the damp track and soon had the home side 8-3. Fynn finished his spell with 1-5 from 4 overs and was replaced by Rupert Martin. Martin was again unlucky when a catch in the covers was put down with the score on 9.Cooper took 2 wickets in his opening spell before he was replaced by Pete Tidey. Martin and Tidey bowled well and kept chipping away. The home side battled well on the slow track. Miller topped scored with 34 before becoming one of Martin’s three victims. Martin finished with 3-41. St. Margaretsbury’s skipper came in and put bat to ball and it looked like he would get him well past 100 before Tidey had him LBW. The home side were 99-7 before Cooper returned to mop up the tail. St. Margaretsbury lost their 3 wickets for just 5 runs, leaving the visitors 105 to win.The wicket had dried as the game had gone on and if Reed could get through the new ball victory was very much possible. Sheffield and Noblet opened the attack and soon had Reed in trouble. They removed both openers in quick succession and reduced Reed to 7-3 in no time. Cooper was removed for 8 and at 18-4 Reed needed a good stand. Roddi Liebenberg and Richard Barlow added a battling 27, before Liebenberg miss timed a short ball and was caught for 24. No else made double figures and the least 5 wickets went down for just [...]

Watford Town

Reed retained their top of the table spot in the Herts League 2 with a convincing win over Watford Town on Saturday. Skipper James Heslam won the toss and elected to bowl, and this decision looked the right one within minutes of the start. Reed’s openers Lee Johnson and Jack Tidey had Watford 5-3 within the third over, leaving Watford in a very precarious position. Watford failed to rebuild in light of some excellent pace bowling by Johnson (4-39) and Tidey (5-42), which saw wickets continuously fall at regular intervals. At 87-8, Watford were in desperate need for some rearguard action and this came through Felton and Latif who looked to bat time whilst picking up much needed runs. The pair put on 52 for the 8th wicket, before Reed picked up the last two wickets with Watford setting Reed a respectable target of 151 to win the game.In reply Reed didn’t start well losing the inform Will Heslam in the third over. This brought Chris Jackson to the crease, who along with James Heslam weathered the early storm before the pair put the game beyond Watford by putting on 104 for the 2nd wicket. James was out for a very impressive 78, holing out to long on. This brought in the versatile Jack Tidey, who on instruction from the skipper to finish the game quickly in light of the oncoming rain put the game beyond Watford with some lusty blows. The pick of which being a huge six to win the game finishing with a quick fire 30. Jackson at the other end batted through to finish with a comfortable 40 not out and Reed took all 30 points in the process.

Welwyn Garden City II

Blitzkreig Reed Run Rampage all in Vain!Having driven through heavy rain on their way to their away fixture at Welwyn Garden City, and with the prospect of further widespread heavy downpours forecast for the rest of the afternoon, top of the table Reed 1st Xl lost the toss and were put in to bat by opponents Welwyn Garden City. Determined to try and salvage a rapid result, and hopefully a win, from the match Reed set about seeking a high score and maximum batting points in helter-skelter style.Skipper James Heslam led a vicious onslaught against the Welwyn opening attack blasting the ball to all parts of the ground. Bowler Hayward went for 56 in only 5 overs as the Heslam brothers put on 98 in only 10.5 overs for the first wicket before James went for 64, his 50 having come up in only 35 balls and with 10 x 4’s. Will Heslam was now joined by Tom Greaves and matters went from bad to worse for the hapless Welwyn change bowlers. Sumpters 3.5 overs cost him 49 runs as Tom Greaves gave him the charge and blasted 2 x 4’s and 5 x 6’s in an aggressive 58* scored in only 27 balls. Meanwhile the equally effective but more conservative Will Heslam was on 44* with the innings only 17.5 overs old. The Reed Plan was to blast a quick 200, gain maximum batting points and then seek to bowl out the opposition to force the win. However a total cloudburst obliterated the ground and washed out the match much to the relief of the Welwyn bowlers but to the frustration of Reed. When the days final results came in it transpired that despite most [...]
