Cheshunt II

Reed IIIs went down to Cheshunt IIs on Saturday after again failing with the bat. On another blissful Saturday afternoon at Freeman, Reed skipper Matt Bowles lost the toss, and his side were asked to field first. Young opening bowlers Alex West and Matt Giblin both bowled with good control early doors, but the experienced Cheshunt batsmen saw off the new ball and begun to push the score towards 50. The introduction of Richard Robertson did bring about a wicket, but Cheshunt rebuilt and a solid partnership of 70 soon followed as they reached 120-1. William Heslam bowled well and was eventually rewarded with a couple of wickets, and once into the middle order, Robertson began to rip through the visiting batsmen, taking a marvellous 6 wickets in his marathon 18 Over spell. However the solid start made ensured Cheshunt reached 187 before they were eventually all out. The returning Will Heald, playing his first game for Reed since 2007, also snared a couple of wickets. Despite having a strong looking batting side ‘on paper’ Reed struggled from the outset, losing John Heslam (4) and Will Heald (0) early. William Heslam again looked good, and raced to 27 before he was the first of a number of victims of the sharp work from the visiting keeper, out stumped. Ben Bowles (14) and Scott Caine (9) briefly steadied the ship, but when both fell in consecutive overs, Reed were in dire straights. Skipper Matt Bowles was joined in the middle by Richard Robertson, and the pair looked comfortable in taking Reed out of danger, until Robertson was bowled after edging a ball onto his pads and then onto the stumps. Steve Lovegrove and Alex West then [...]

Radlett II

Reed convincingly beat fellow promotion chasers Radlett on Saturday taking them to 3rd in the Herts Division 2 . On wicket and outfield which had been subject to the recent rain, Radlett won the toss and put Reed into bat looking to take advantage of the conditions. The raw pace of Radlett’s South African opening bowler J Mafa and the guile of Stuart Browne was watchfully played by Reed’s opening pair of Heslam and Dobson, before the South African took both their wickets with the score at 62. Chris Jackson had settled in well at this point, and carefully started building an innings with the assistance of the Reed’s middle order. Jackson worked the ball well around the ground in a fine innings of 107. Attempting to take the inning to excess of 200, both Jackson and Reed’s late order fell looking to play their shots. Reed’s 206 for 9 was a challenging total for the visitors, but with the wicket and outfield drying out the conditions were definitely now more in favour of the visitors. In reply Reed’s opening pair of Lee Johnson and Graham Wilson bowled imperiously, offering the Radlett openers very little rest bite, which soon saw them slowly getting behind the run rate. Johnson took the middle stump of opener Lewis in the 6th over, before a 2nd wicket partnership of 60 was built by Patternott and Walker. Falling behind in the run rate, Walker started to open his arms, before he fell to Morss (1-22), caught in the deep by Jackson. Andy Young (2-19) picked up 2 wickets in a tight spell of bowling, which saw Radlett’s attempt to chase Reed’s total falter. With the score on 101 for 5, [...]

Rickmansworth II

Reed II’s came away with an emphatic victory over Rickmansworth II’s at The Green on Saturday. Batting first, Reed’s openers Baz Curtis and Fergus Martin got off to a solid start, taking the score towards 3 figures when Curtis fell for a well made 43. Fergus Martin was then joined by younger looking brother Marcus at the crease, and another large partnership followed. F. Martin played some wonderful strokes, and soon passed his half-century, with M. Martin also beginning to find the boundary with more ease. M. Martin reached his half-century, before he fell, caught behind for 57. Undeterred by the loss of his brother, F. Martin went on to score a fantastic maiden, and near chanceless league century, ending up 102 Not Out. Ian Fulk (17) also added some runs with a late cameo, as Reed declared on 227-4 off of 51 of their allotted 53 Overs. Rickmansworth’s reply never looked like getting going, from the moment the ‘evergreen’ Peter Tidey bowled one opener, and the returning Andrew Emms trapped the other LBW. Both bowlers ripped into the visitors, Emms finishing with 5 wickets, and Tidey 4 as Rickmansworth finished up 68 all out. Rupert Martin was the final wicket taker, giving Reed a well deserved 30points, leaving them comfortably in mid-table with hat looks to be another season in Division 6 to look forward to next year.

Radlett IV

Early sunshine greeted Reed II as they travelled to Radlett. Reed captain Jason Archer lost the toss and was asked to field. Radlett's innings got off to a poor start losing T.Johnson for 3 being bowled by P.Tidey (27-6-75-5). T. Malde and N.Nandhra then offered some stubborn resistance before Nandhra was caught and bowled by Tidey for 9. Reed then took two quick wickets leaving the home side on 75-4 at drinks. T.Peck and J.wells looked solid before Mitchell Cooper ran out Peck for 32. Wells was joined by T.Charles and together they started to form a partnership before Jason Archer (14-2-72-3) had Wells Bowled for 41. Sutherland came into bat and was soon caught in the deep by Cooper for 3. Tidey picked up his fifth wicket after bowling Lederman for 3. A.Hussien and Charles put on runs at the end including a 7 off the final ball of the innings to bring their score to 185-9 off the allotted 53 overs. Reed's openers set about getting the target opening with Fergus Martin and William Heslam. Heslam was bowled for 12 with the score on 21 in the ninth over. Martin was joined by Baz Curtis and together they put on 33 before Martin was caught off the bowling of Sutherland (5-0-15-1). Ed Garrott (1), Curtis (25) and Cooper (2) fell in quick sucession leaving the visitors on 67-5. Matt Bowles and Richard Johnson stabalised the innings before Johnson went for 13 caught at mid on. Keeper Sean Tidey was caught and bowled for 1. Rupert Martin (8), Peter Tidey (6) and Jason Archer (4) came in and supported bowles on his way to a quickfire 41 including 6 fours and a huge six as Reed fell 44 runs [...]

Old Finchleians

Reed travelled to Barnet to play Old Finchleians on a beautiful summers day. Old Finchleians won the toss and asked the visitors to bat. Reed got off to the worst possible start when in-form James Heslam was adjudged LBW first ball of the game. Things did not get much better for Reed when Fergus Martin was caught behind for a single. Chris Jackson and Tom Fulk had the task of rebuilding the innings and sensibly they took a very cautious approach early on, with the opening bowlers hitting a consistent line and length. The pair gradually got to grips with the task in hand, playing some classical cover drives. The opening bowlers began to tire in the afternoon sunshine and were perhaps kept on for a few too many overs as Jackson and Fulk looked increasingly comfortable. The introduction of spin from both ends slowed the run rate notably. The 2 spinners complemented each other perfectly, with a wrist spinner bowling with good pace and a “googly” in his armoury, and an off spinner bowling very slowly and with lots of flight. The lack of pace on the ball and some good field placings made scoring runs difficult. Eventually with the score on 94, Fulk was caught behind for an excellent 47. This brought Phil Frenay to the crease who, trying to push the run rate along, miscued a drive to point and was caught for 1. Tom Greaves was next in, his first batting opportunity for the I’s this season. The pair worked the spinners well, with Jackson continuing to caress some imperious drives through the covers and Greaves playing some delicate touch shots through the leg side. Greaves was eventually out in similar [...]

Letchworth III

Reed 2s picked up their second victory in 3 outings after a tremendous team performance against high flying Letchworth. Reed lost the toss and were asked to bat, a decision that the Letchworth skipper may have regretted as Mark King (62) & Fergus Martin (53) compiled an opening stand of 80 before King was bowled when looking imperious.Martin, with Smith, Cooper and Fulk then took Reed past the 100 mark and into the points, before falling after a patient innings of quality, peppered with a series of fine boundaries. Kallum and Karl Ward (38) then took over, Karl taking the lead as Reed accelerated past 200 before the innings closed at a competitive 213 - 7.Opening pair Rupert Martin (2-43) and Kallum Ward took the attack to Letchworth, but it was the introduction of skipper Jason Archer that turned the tide. Archer bowled 11 overs taking 7-17 including an all bowled hatrick to record career best figures. Letchworth slumped from 62-2 to 107 all out. Of the 10 wickets Reed took, 8 were clean bowled, one an LBW and the other a fine run out by Ian Fulk a direct hit from square leg with only "one" stump to aim at.After a slow start Reed are now picking up the points they require to make a push for promotion in the second half of the season.

Northwood

Reed 1st team travelled to an in-form Northwood last Saturday, looking to end a run of poor results and get their season back on track. According to the weather forecasters it was touch and go as to weather the game would be completed and thanks to a shockingly poor wicket there was never any danger of a drawn game. Obviously the Northwood skipper was unaware as to how poorly the track was going to play, as he won the toss and chose to bat. Reed made a perfect start to the game, thanks to a double strike from Lee Johnson (8-1-34-2) reducing the hosts to 1 for 2. Despite this excellent start and continued pressure applied by the accurate bowling of L. Johnson and fellow opener Graham Wilson (11-3-26-0) a third wicket partnership developed. With L. Johnson tiring after a spell of hostile bowling, Bernie Morss (13-6-14-2) took over. He, in conjunction with Wilson beat the bat on numerous occasions with the ball gripping on the very dry wicket. The game really changed in favour of the visiting side when Wilson made way for Andy Young (9.1-4-25-6). With the score on 82 the third wicket was taken, breaking a partnership of 81 runs. The next 7 wickets proceeded to fall for just 21 runs, with Morss and Young appearing pretty much impossible to play on this difficult wicket. Reed knew that they had a hard, yet achievable target to reach. James Heslam and Si Jackson batted with much purpose opening the batting. S Jackson determined to keep the bowlers at bay whilst Heslam played the more aggressive role. It was Heslam (17) who was first to go with the total on 35 when he was [...]

Northwood Town

On a slightly green but dry track Northwood Town won the toss and elected to bat in this Saturday SHCL Div 2 Reed Home fixture. Lee Johnson (2 for 48) opened the bowling with debutant Jack Tidey (2 for 26) with the young bowler Tidey soon causing problems, removing the dangerous looking Vann-ee for 8, bowled. Despite bowling up hill into a stiff wind Jack soon struck again removing the talented number three for Northwood Lee for 9, again bowled. During Jack’s impressive spell, Lee Johnson was again pilling on the pressure from his end, with some controlled but aggressive fast bowling. Due to restriction on young bowlers, Mr Tidey had to be replace with the inform Richard Johnson (1 for 14) who continue the opening bowlers good work, removing Costard (39) who had batted very well hitting some great shots straight. Again Lee supported Richard superbly, finally getting some justice for his fine spell, trapping Heaney LBW and bowling Lister in quick succession. Andy Young (2 for 6) was brought into the attack with Northwood score standing at 83 for 5, and was in truth a little too good for the lower middle order, removing Doling with a quick delivery that lifted off a length and setting up Bushnell with two that beat him on the outside of his bat, then bowling a full in swinger that hit middle and off stump. This brought captain Raj Hluwalia (26) to the crease and with Robbin quickly being dismissed by the tricky off spin of Dobson (3 for 11) left Northwood Town 8 for 87. Raj played a captains inning being support by the stubborn Robbins, accumarating 33 valuable runs on for the ninth wicket before [...]

Broxbourne II

Reed’s 2nd XI went into the match needing a point to be sure of staying up and left with all 30. Skipper Jason Archer again won the toss and decided to bat first. It didn’t look good when Baz Curtis was dismissed 3rd ball for a duck. This brought Ed Garrott to crease to join Fergus Martin. Both stood up well to the pace of Smith and didn’t look in too much trouble until Smith managed to nip one away and hit Martin’s off stump. This left Reed 21-2 from 11 overs.Richard Johnson replaced Martin and hit two lovely fours before chasing a wide one and being caught behind off the bowling of Rhodes. At 32-3 the visitors must have thought the divisional title was in their grasp and another victory in sight. Mitchell Cooper along with Garrott had other ideas and steadied the ship putting on 81 for the 4th wicket. Garrott hitting some lovely drives through the covers. Cooper happy to give Garrott the strike found the gaps and rotated the strike well. Maximum batting points looked on the cards when Cooper smashed one back only for bowler Rhodes to stick out a foot and deflect the ball onto the stumps leaving Garrott out of his ground. He had looked in full control and a ton wasn’t out of the question, but instead he was run out for 71. Ian Fulk joined Cooper and in his very with his usual Brazilian flare deserting him his stoutly scored 28 to take Reed to 153-5 with only 5 overs left. In a late flurry Reed tried to up the run rate, but only lost wickets. 153-5 soon became 165 and it was left to Peter [...]
