Holwell Home

Reed lost out to North Herts League Division 1 champions Holwell on Sunday in a high scoring game on ‘The Green’, after poor fielding let the home side down.Winning the toss and batting first, Reed openers Tom Fulk (8) and Phil Frenay (0) both fell early, victims of Howell’s ‘pacemen’ Parkins and Dixon respectively. Dixon also accounted for Michael Robertson (4) to leave Reed struggling on 17-3. Richard Barlow and Karl Ward showed good resilience for Reed however, with Barlow looking solid and Ward finding boundaries to take Reed over the 50 mark. However, Dixon struck again, first to remove Ward for 22, and then Barlow for 11 to leave the home side in deep trouble on 64-5 after 14 Overs.Reed captain Marcus Martin and Richard Johnson then set about Salvaging the innings. Both Batsmen showed their class, with a fine array of shots played on both sides of the wicket. Martin was playing a captains innings, and Johnson’s sublime technique gave the Holwell bowlers a tough time. Martin reached his 50 with 8 boundaries, and Johnson also made 50 hitting six 4’s. Johnson was eventually bowled by off spinner Paola for 53, but Martin remained unbeaten at this point. Matt Bowles joined his captain in the middle with Overs running out, and the pair took the score to 197, before Martin was caught for a magnificent 76. Bowles then hit his way to 14 not out, and Reed finished their 40 Overs on 213-7.In reply, Holwell were faced with the pace attack of Andy Wholley and Rupert Martin. Despite some good bowling, especially early on from Wholley, Holwell’s opening batsmen Parkins and Rudder remained, and began to free their arms and find the boundaries. [...]

Hatfield Away

Reed captain Marcus Martin won the toss and elected to field. Reed opened the bowling with Richard Johnson and Andrew Wholley, and the pair got Reed off to a great start with some good pace and swing. Both bowlers bowled 8 Overs straight, with Wholley impressing with figures of 8-1-2-22, and Johnson also picking up 2 wickets with figures of 8-0-2-45, leaving Hatfield struggling a bit on 57 for 4. Hitchiner scored 20 quickly, but was caught well at backwards point by Bowles off of Wholley, who also bowled Causton for 4. Johnson’s 2 wickets came about with 2 sharp catches by wicket keeper Graham Hazard. However, Hatfield dug themselves out of a hole well and showed why they are pushing for honours in the league, after superb innings from Golder and Whitehead. Golder scored 48 before he was eventually run out, and Whitehead scored a cultured 41 before youngster Mitchell Cooper performed heroics to catch him 1 handed off of the pacey bowling of Marcus Martin. Cooper also impressed with the ball, and was unlucky to have come away without reward from his 5 Overs. Jason Pallett was also in good form, his clever off spin only going fro 32 in 7 Overs, bowing at the death. A good partnership from Braine (11 Not Out) and Wynne (31 Not Out) at the end of the innings pushed Hatfield’s score above 200 to a challenging 214 for 7 off of their 40 Overs. In reply, Reed sent out Fergus Martin and Phil Frenay to open their innings. Frenay got out of the traps well, and looked classy as he kept Reed up with the run rate early on. Martin was a perfect foil at the other end, [...]

Great Gaddesden Away

Reed travelled to Great Gaddesden under the new captain Marcus Martin. Martin won the toss and chose to bat on what looked like a good batting track. Baz Curtis and Furgus Martin opened for Reed. They both looked comfortable until Martin fell LBW for 5. Marcus Martin (29) came to the crease and joins Curtis, both scoring runs all around the park . Curtis was caught behind for 36. Other Reed batsmen to score runs were Robert Costen (17), Richard Johnson (27) and Karl Ward (22). The pick of the Great Gaddesden bowlers were Cheeseman senior with 2-34 and Cheeseman junior 3-25. Reed took to the field with express pacemen Richard Johnson 2-40 and Graham Wilson 3-13 both bowling with good pace. They both took key wickets to put victory in the captains eyes. Reed's fielding was generally tight with a superb catch by Costen at slip. Fergus Martin took a difficult catch at point to remove a threatening batsman. David Hill also bowled well finishing with 2-27 taking two wickets in two balls after catch by Ward and a catch by part time wicket keeper Marcus Martin. Neil Haslam kept on nagging away with a good line and length and finshied with 3-18. Captain Martin was happy with his teams performance and was glad to get his first victory under his belt.

Old Finchleians II

Reed II’s travelled to Old Finchleians on Saturday looking to improve upon their recent form. Reed captain Jason Archer lost the toss, and his side were put into the field by Finchleians captain A. Savani in the baking North London sunshine.Reed’s opening bowlers Richard Robertson and Karl Ward got them off to a perfect start, taking a wicket apiece to leave Old Finchleians 14-2. However, a slow but steady 70 run partnership saw Finchleians move towards a decent total. In order to combat this, Reed captain Archer made an inspired bowling change by introducing himself, in conjunction with the returning Rupert Martin. Martin ripped into the Finchleians middle order, breaking the menacing partnership and taking the wicket of danger man Faisal for 46. Martin went on to take 3 wickets in his first spell, and was supported ably by captain Jason Archer, who returned to form with a superb and mammoth spell of bowling in which he was rewarded with 3 wickets for only 24 runs.Part time spinner Ben Bowles also excelled with the ball, bowling a highly economical 5 over spell in tandem with Archer, to heap the pressure on the Old Finchleians batsmen looking to set a challenging total. Bowles was highly unlucky not to take a wicket in his bowling stint, but with some decent lower order batting Finchleians were able to creep towards their first batting points target of 145. The reintroduction of Martin did get Reed another wicket, however the home side were able to survive and batted out their allotted 53 Overs for 152-9. Reed looked to have the edge in the game as their openers went out to chase the target, but as has happened on too many [...]

Crawley Green Nomads Away

Reed won an entertaining and bizarre low scoring match away to Crawley Green Nomads on Sunday, this despite only having 10 players and suffering a huge batting collapse.Reed lost bowling all-rounder Rupert Martin before the match due to unforeseen circumstances, and were forced to field only 10 players against the Luton side. Captain Marcus Martin won the toss and put the home side into bat on a strip that resembled a bowling green more than a cricket pitch.Martin’s decision looked entirely justified as his opening bowler Richard Johnson (8-0-41-4) and ripped into the Crawley Green top order, whilst fellow opener Karl Ward (8-2-18-0) tied the hosts down with a sublime spell of line and length bowling. Johnson’s fiery quick bowling was too much for the Nomad’s batsmen, on what was proving to be a challenging pitch, after 12 Overs the home team were left reeling on 36-4 with Reed ‘keeper Robert Willoughby excelling with 3 catches, including one contender for ‘catch of the season’.Skipper Martin then introduced himself into the bowling attack, and his own brand of hostile pace bowling brought instant rewards. Martin took 3 wickets in 4 balls, including that of Y. Jethwa (19) who had looked dangerous. Martin went on to take a fourth wicket in his highly productive 6 Over spell, which yielded 4 wickets for only 14 runs. Crawley Green stalwart G. Hill (28) did manage to take his sides score up towards three figures, but young off spinner Ed Garrott accounted for his off stump with a brilliant ball before he could do too much damage. Jason Pallett also picked up a wicket to end the Crawley Green innings on 96, after just 30.4 of the allotted 40 Overs.Due [...]

Old Cholmeleians

Reed II’s were unable to gain consecutive victories, but still came away with the lions share of the points after Old Cholmeleians blocked out for a draw at ‘The Green’ on Saturday. After winning the toss, captain Jason Archer elected to bat on what looked like a typically exemplary Reed track. Reed sent out Ben Bowles and Mark King open their innings, and King wasted no time in building the home sides total. King was timing the ball excellently, and his classy array of shots was giving the Old Cholmeleians bowling attack with a torrid time. Ben Bowles was also looking good, and provided an ideal partner for King as Reed’s total moved towards 80. However King then suffered the misfortune of a slight recurrence of the hamstring injury that had kept him out for a month, and was forced to retire hurt whilst unbeaten on 60. This brought young all-rounder Ed Garrott to the crease, who in conjunction with the resilient Ben Bowles, continued to push Reed’s score beyond the 100 mark. Bowles was looking good and set for a half century when was unfortunate to be stumped with the ball ricocheting off of the wicket keepers pads onto the wickets after a swinging delivery for 38. Ed Garrott also looked set for a high score after some good looking shots when he was bowled for 21. Then when Ian Fulk was also stumped for 2, Reed’s good start was in danger of being undone at 156-3 (plus the injured and retired Mark king) off of 34 of their allotted 53 Overs. Matt Bowles and Chris Shorrock then set about trying to increase the Reed total in the remaining 19 Overs, and did so with [...]

Old Albanians

Reed started their season with a bang, as they cruised to a dominating 83 run victory over Old Albanian thanks to an all round display with bat, ball and in the field.Winning the toss and electing to bat on a pitch that appeared to offer more support to the batting side, it was quickly proven that there was some life for bowlers with the new ball, as Heslam (33) and Curtis (14) struggled initially to master the fast bowling of C. Hussey (16-2-65-0) and A Jones (9-0-51-0) as bounce varied considerably. However, when the new ball lost its hardness, Heslam and Curtis found batting a great deal easier and grafted a solid platform of 43 before Curtis cut to point. Once again, Heslam teamed up with Chris Jackson (91) to bring the score to 64 before a mix up between the batsmen cost Heslam his wicket. However, with Tom Fulk (31), Jackson took the reins and forged ahead with a responsible, and at times belligerent innings that took him closer to his first century of the season. Ably supported by Fulk, the pair tore into the left arm wrist spin of T Preest, until Fulk played a lazy shot to be caught at midwicket, and Chris Jackson was eventually run out 9 runs short of his century.William Clarke (0), on the back of a solid innings the weekend before, was dismissed with ease, and it was left to Simon Jackson (23*) and Marcus Martin (8*) to pinch cheeky singles and run hard between the wickets in the closing overs to bring the score to 216-5 off their allotted 53 overs. With the absence this season of Michael Berks and early season injury to Andy Young, Reed opened [...]

Biddenham NVC

Following Reed 1st XI’s success as Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Champions in 2006 with their victory over Langleybury last year, their quest began afresh again on Sunday as they faced Biddenham away. With the backdrop of a thumping victory against Buntingford the previous day, Reed picked up where they left off, as they amassed a goliath 274 for 5 off their 40 overs, managing finally to beat Biddenham by 141 runs.Reed’s innings again started briskly as skipper James Heslam (58) and Baz Curtis (22) smashed the ball to all parts of a large ground until Curtis feathered a ball to the wicket keeper off Edmunds (9-0-49-2). However, it was an historic moment for Curtis, as this match marked his 15,000th run for Reed CC, marked primarily with his blistering form as an opener in both league and limited overs cricket. Heslam continued with Tom Fulk (90) until he played a lazy shot to point off Edmunds. With the score on 92-2 off only 12 overs, Reed’s openers had built a solid and confident platform for the middle order to exploit, and Fulk, together Chris Jackson (21) continued in steady fashion to pull the score to 145-2 off 25 overs. When Jackson mistimed a lofted drive to be caught off Taylor (9-0-42-1), Clarke (61*) came to the crease to partner Fulk as they plundered the second string bowlers to boost the score to 259 off 38 overs. When Fulk was run-out trying to reach for his century, Richard Johnson (3) joined Clarke but was bowled by a rapid straight delivery from D Morrish (4-0-27-1). Marcus Martin (2*) continued to partner Clarke to the end, as the pair took 17 off the final over, to settle the score [...]

Northwood Town II

Reed II’s salvaged a draw away at Northwood Town II’s on Saturday, but their inept batting performance left captain Jason Archer fuming.Losing the toss on a scorching Summers afternoon, Reed were put into the field by the Northwood captain. Richard Johnson (0-40) and Graham Wilson (2-28) opened the bowling for the visitors and did so very well, causing the Northwood batsmen no end of problems. Indeed, Wilson’s canny and probing line snared an early wicket after gaining an edge through to keeper Matt Bowles. Reed continued to pile on pressure, and another Wilson wicket, combined with 3 from Skipper Archer (3-29) and 2 from Karl Ward (2-60) left the home side in big trouble on 110-7.However an effective lower order partnership got Northwood out of a hole, and took their score up towards 150. Rupert Martin snared a late wicket to help reduce the arrears, but it was spinner Ben Bowles’ introduction that finally did the trick for Reed. The veteran bowled just 4 balls, but took the last 2 wickets, one thanks to a sharp stumping from brother Matt Bowles to leave Northwood all out on 189.Reed’s reply got off well, with Ben Bowles (21) and Stuart Smith (26) both looking good and progressing the score to 42. However when Smith went, caught at mid off, the Reed batting collapse started. Michael Robertson went next, and when Ben Bowles edged behind Reed were faltering. Karl Ward, Richard Johnson and Matt Bowles all then played very poor shots to get themselves out in quick succession, meaning Reed had gone from 42-0, to 86-7. Luckily for Reed, Fergus and Rupert Martin kept their heads and batted very maturely to help see off the bulk of the [...]

Northwood Town

Reed were away to Northwood Town on Saturday in their bid to pick up winning ways and surge towards top of the table by beating one of the Division’s weaker teams. However, it was not to be as both sides had to settle for 10 points as Northwood Town’s reply was stunted by heavy and persistent rain shortly after tea.Losing the toss, Reed were asked to bat on a green and traditionally lively wicket similar to that of Sabina Park, but without the West Indian weather and picture postcard surroundings. The wicket offered immediate and exaggerated assistance to the bowlers as D Bushnell (13-2-64-1) and Richard Doling (11-3-29-0) created some early difficulties for James Heslam (52) and Baz Curtis (25) with unpredictable bounce and sharp seam movement. However, the Reed pair weathered accurate spells to build a strong opening partnership of 44, thanks to a straight six from Curtis and a glorious hook for the maximum by Heslam off Bushnell. When Curtis finally fell trying to guide the ball to third man, but instead feeding second slip, Heslam assumed the reins of responsibility as he and Chris Jackson (31) structured a slow but consistent partnership to take the score to 98 highlighted by two or three crushing square cuts. Northwood Town’s second string bowlers also failed to glean any wickets, until part time bowler and skipper Raj Ahluwalia (13-4-46-7) put himself on to bowl his medium paced left arm swingers. He immediately had Heslam caught by the wicket keeper with a loose stroke and Chris Jackson soon followed with an ill considered drive that instead rearranged his off and middle stumps. With Karl Ward (5), promoted in the order, trying to force the pace as clouds [...]
