Chipperfield – NVC

Fresh from Saracens Herts League Division 4 victory and promotion, Reed picked up where they left off by crushing Chipperfield in the first round of their National Village Cup campaign on Sunday. Despite losing the toss, Reed restricted the opposition to 155 in their 40 overs after Chipperfield's flamboyant opening which rewarded them with 36 runs for no loss in only 7 overs. It took Reed veteran, Peter Tidey (2-30), using his vast experience, to bowl dangerman Khan (27). Clarke (2-41) quickly followed his lead, dislodging the other opener Carson with a sharp caught and bowled. This however allowed McNicol to the crease as he confidently dominated the faster bowling with a powerful 40, until Berks (2-40) removed him and his partner in quick succession. This break, combined with the intelligent spin bowling of C. Jackson (1-23) and tight fielding in the covers, increased pressure on Chipperfield to maintain a healthy scoring rate. There were some notable catches, particularly by skipper S. Jackson and G.Wornham which helped maintain pressure. Their middle order struggled to break the succession of maidens, and once they fell to some misjudged strokes, the lower order were forced to take some riskier shots, from which both R.Robertson (2-9) and Clarke benefited. Chipperfield's responded with some very tight and intelligent seam bowling, reducing Reed to 5-1 in 5 overs, and 34-1 in 15 overs. Yet, once Wale (1-47) and Mir (0-17) were replaced, J.Heslam (26) and C.Jackson (21) cut loosed and imposed their authority with some blistering cut strokes. Yet Carson and McNicol created problems again by ending their innings, tipping the run-chase into the balance, particularly as Wornham (46) struggled early on to dominate the bowling. Yet, in partnership with Curtis [...]

After losing the toss and being put into bat, Chris Jackson and Tom Fulk started to rewrite the record books. Despite good opening spells from Hammond and Nathan, the pair saw off the new ball and then accellerated, unleashing a barrage of unstoppable shots and delivering some punishing blows to the Hare Street attack. The pair raced from 100 off 17 overs to 351 off 40overs, with the final 50 runs coming off off just 25 balls. Jackson was finally out for a career best of 186 with just 3 balls remaining hitting 17x 4s and 6x 6s, whilst Tom Fulk carried his bat for 153 scoring 18x 4s and 1x 6. Reed finished on 351 for 1 in only 40 overs! Their partnership of 344 set a club record and was also the 2nd highest partnership ever in the competition's long history. In reply Hare St got off to a poor start when their Captain Fitzgerald was caught by a diving catch by Reed wicketkeeper Simon Jackson. However some solid batting including a 95 partnership from Clive Newland and Hammond saw Hare St to a very credible 190 for 4. Reed are at home to their conquerers of 2 years ago, Biddenham in the next round on 25th May. Reed captain Simon Jackson said "after our great win against Cottered on Saturday I didnt think we would have a better achievement on the Sunday in the National Villagehampionship. St. Albans West Indies Away 2003

Hurricane Jim Allsopp Blows Away Windies Reed II's continued their relentless march toward the Division 8 title on Saurday with a 55 run defeat of closest rivals St Albans West Indians. A weakened Reed side missing skipper John Heslam and four other regulars lost the toss and were asked to bat in Caribean like conditions in North Herts. Reed got off to an inauspicious start with high scoring opener Ian Fulk caught behind in the second over of the day for a duck. He was quickly followed back to the pavillion by fellow opener Baker (15) and Ward (5) to leave the home side reeling on 30-3. A period of consoldation was required and captain for the day Bridge (21) and left hander Shorrock (20) edged Reed up to 61 off 26 overs before a mistimed cover drive saw the former joining the rest of the top order back in the hutch. The visitors started to turn the screw and another mini collapse followed with Reed crawling to 81-6. The order of the day was to bat out the remaining overs and edge towards the first batting points still some 60 runs off. Emms and Reed colt "Marvellous" Marcus Martin followed the instructions to the letter both playing patient innings and both dispatching the bad balls to the boundary. Emms eventually fell to a snorter of a delivery on seventeen, but that only inspired youngster Martin who frustrated the bowlers and built an eventual match winning innings of 40 not out. Farming the strike like a player many years his senior he, along with Reeds wagging tail pushed the score along to a credible 165 all out in 51 overs. Daya and Stapleton proving the [...]

Hatfield Hyde II Away 2003

Reed II who have been at the top of Saracens Herts League Division 8 since the start of the season secured the league championship with an easy win over a poor Hatfield Hyde II XI. The match proved totally one sided and anti climactic after Hatfield Hyde II won the toss and chose to bat. Opener Nobbs rode his luck for 33, but only two other Hyde batsman made double figures as they struggled againth the Reed pace bowling. Jim Allsopp enjoyed no luck despite beating the bat regularly, but Andrew Emms (3-22) and Richard Johnson (2-30) broke the back of the Hatfield innings. 52-1 became 57-4 and 87-6 as wickets fell regularly. Jason Archer (3-15) and Richard Robertson wrapped up the long Hatfield tail with four wickets falling in 4 balls with the score on 97. Chasing 98 to win proved a formality with the Hatfield bowling proving as ineffective as the batting. Paul Watts fell for 22 giving the visitors their only point, but Ian Fulk 58 not out saw Reed comfortably home with Reed reaching the required total in less than 20 overs and the game disappointley early soon after 5pm.

Therfield 2002

In the first round of the Keatley Cup Reed faced Therfield at home. Therfield elected to bat first on a damp wicket and got off to a reasonable start despite a tight opening spell by Graham Wilson conceding just 8 runs in his 3 8-ball overs. However, as the visitors looked to accelerate further they lost wickets at regular intervals and were kept to under a hundred with Emms and Heslam taking 3 wickets a piece. In reply Reed didn’t start well with Heslam and Chris Jackson going cheaply but Simon Jackson played a fluent knock scoring 29 in no time including a straight six to add momentum to the home sides innings. The departure of S Jackson run out from the boundary brought Gary Bridge to the crease who hit two big sixes in his hard hitting 43 not out to see Reed home with the aid of a solid looking Tom Fulk (12 not out) with 3 overs to spare.

Aspenden, Standon & Puckeridge – Keatley Cup 2003

Reed win by 86 runs Reed booked their place in the Keatley Cup semi finals on Tuesday night as they surged to a comprehensive 86 run victory over Aspenden, Standon & Puckeridge at home. Winning the toss, Reed skipper William Clarke elected to bat, and it proved to be the correct decision as Simon Jackson, club and 1st XI captain, struck a chanceless 67*, and ran very efficiently between the wickets with Ben Bowles (26). John Heslam (12), Chris Jackson (14) and a typically flamboyant 14* by Jim Allsopp ensured that the home side reached a challenging 153 for 4 in their 15 eight ball overs. In response, Aspenden could not have made a worse start as their opener was caught at midwicket on the first ball of the innings off Clarke (3-0-12-3), and his fellow opener was bowled shortly afterwards. At the other end, Peter Tidey (3-0-12-3) also tore through the line-up as Reed&Mac226;s opening bowlers left a trail of destruction leaving Aspenden floundering on 22 for 6. Jim Allsopp (3-1-11-0), Richard Johnson (3-0-14-1) and Richard Robertson (2-0-9-1) also ensured that runs were kept tight, leaving Aspenden on 67 for 9 after their 15 overs. The next round is due to be played at a neutral ground, yet to be drawn, on 27th June
