Botany Bay 2001

Reed’s hopes of achieving promotion to Herts League Division Three took a massive blow on Saturday as they were robbed of victory at fellow promotion contenders Botany Bay by rain. With Reed chasing a target of 219 to win in 47 overs they were very well placed at 182-2 when the heavens opened. Although play continued for a while after the rain had begun the situation worsened and despite both captains agreeing to continue the umpires decided that the conditions were unplayable. This left Reed with just 8 points from the game, less than if it had been rained off at 1.00pm Botany Bay amassed 219 despite a good all-round bowling and fielding display by Reed. Missing key bowlers Berks and Tidey as well as spin option Chris Jackson it was always going to be a struggle but Heslam, Costen and Saunders supported the remaining senior bowlers, Johnson and Clarke well. Johnson was probably the pick of the bowlers taking 2-35 off 10 overs. In reply, Reed had an excellent start and the partnership of 164 between Heslam and Curtis in 31 overs and looked set to lead Reed to a comfortable victory. Although Heslam and Curtis departed for 94 and 63 respectively needing only 38 more runs to win in 12 overs with 8 wickets in hand Reed looked very well set. Curtis was in particularly fine form smashing Botany Bays attack to all parts whilst Heslam played a controlled innings in support of his fellow opener. However, it was not to be and thanks to the weather Reed are likely to have to win all 3 remaining games to stand any chance of promotion.

Holtwhites 2001

Reed cruised to a league victory in the first game of the 2001 season. With no second team game, Reed bought in the senior players from the 2s to add some experience to the side however it was Reeds youngsters that stole the show. After losing the toss, Reed got off to a solid start with Baz Curtis and 18 years old James Heslam putting on 66 for the first wicket be for Baz played one slog to many! This bought in the returning, globetrotting Chris Jackson to put together a partnership with Kipper Heslam. Kipper stroked the ball elegantly all around the ground in reaching his fifty which was bought up with a huge six over mid-wicket. Kipper then excelerated to the 90s be for finally completing his first ever league ton for Reed 1st team. However the ball after reaching the milestone, Kipper was caught on the boundary by an excellant catch. The 113 partnership had put Reed onto 179 for 2 in the 39th over. Wickets continued to fall and the final score of 219 for 5 off 51 overs flattered Holtwhites as Reed had dominated the innings. In reply Holtwhites got off to a slow start thanks to tight bowling from 18 year old Michael Berks and old boy Ian Roberts. Reed fielded well and with tight bowling Holtwhites were never going to win the game however Reed had to get all ten wickets. Then stepped up Berksie for his second spell and ripped through the middle order of Holtwhites, with able support from the other bowlers. Berksie finished with 5 for 9 off 14 overs b4 2nd team vice captain Richard Robertson took the final wicket with 3 overs to [...]

Old Haberdashers II 2001

Reed got off to a terrible start losing 2 wickets in the first over. Tom Fulk (15) and John Heslam (34) led the recovery, but apart from Stuart Smith (29) no other Reed batsmen got to grips with the bowlers. Reed limped to 127 all out. Old Haberdashers also lost wickets steadily and at 65-5 it was anybodies game. Reed had however gifted their opponents a huge number of extras in 'no balls' and 'wides' Kapadia (39) and Clarke (14) took Haberdashers to within 8 of victory at 120-5 before Reed started a remarkable fight back. Four wickets fell without a run being scored, leaving Haberdashers 120-9. With both sides pressing for the win Haberdashers edged to victory ultimatley aided by the 39 extras Reed gave them. This included 21 wides, 9 no bals, 4 byes and even a 5 for a struck helmet on the field.

Langlebury III 2001

Strike bowler Richard Robertson recorded career best bowling figures of 9-46 and then hit a sparkling half-century to h elp Reed seconds to victory. Veteran Robertson, who has played at Reed for almost 20 years, primarily as a first team opening bowl, recently decided to drop down to the seconds to take over as vice captain. The 48 year old's bowling performance in Saturday's Herts League clash beat his previous best of 8-14, taken more than 10 years ago. He said: "To take 9-46 was something extraordinary and as there was a lot of out-swing available, I thought it could be one of those days." "The atmosphere around the ground was quite heavy and the ball was swinging for me quite a fair bit." "To then go out an hit a 50 that took us within sight of the finish was also extraordinary, so overall the game was a fabulous one for me and the team." Team captain John Heslam paid tribute to Robertson's performance, describing it as a "marvellous controlled display of swing bowling." He said: "Richard is a real stalwart at the club and it is great to see him still putting in headline performances. He was unlucky not to take all 10 wickets. "I have seen two such displays during my career and if it happens, it happens. If Richard had taken nine wickets in a row we would have tried to help him take the final one, but at the time there as still a game to be won. "Nevertheless, it was a fantastic all-round display and we are all very pleased for him." Reed's opening attack of Graham Wilson and Jim Alsop kept Langleybury quiet but at 89-3 they were [...]

Shepreth 2001

Reed easily won in the 1st round of the National Village Cup against local team Shepreth. Reed amasssed the huge total of 279 in only 40 overs. Reed got off to another solid start with James Heslam and Roger Bowcock putting on 50 for the first wicket. However the loss of Bowcock bought Heslam and Jackson back together and the results were very similar to Saturday. With Heslam continuing his good form in scoring 40 before being stumped dancing down the wicket to leggy Phil Skinner and Jackson batting well b4 being caught for 42. However Reeds highest scorer was James' dad and 2nd team captain, John "one shot" Heslam. Heslam Snr scored 68 which included a 131 runs partnership with Jackson. Despite Andy Goodship “Lollipop” getting a duck, Reed managed a super total with Pete Costen chipping in with an entertaining 39. In reply Shepreth never got out of the traps, with Will Clarke pace and Neil Haslams tight swing bowling runs were never going to be easy. With wickets shared between Clarke, Haslam, Heslam, Costen and Clive Collins Reed finished off Shepreth for 120 in 30 overs to give Reed a tricky clash against Knebworth Park in the second round. Sorry Shepreth stole the book and I do not have any figures from their innings!!!!!!!!!!!!

President’s Day 2001 Report

Thirteen teams entered the 2001 Presidents Day six-a-side competition. The 1999 winners, Simon and Chris Jackson were back after missing last years event, but the holders Duncan Easley and Jason Nolan were unable to defend their trophy. Play started promptly at 11am with one of the favourites for the trophy, Richard Johnson and Michael Berks taking on Tom Fulk and Marcus Martin. The younger pair batted first and up against the first team strike pair did well to reach 125 without losing a wicket. The did even better when it came to bowl, but in the end lost by 2 runs, but at least had the satisfaction of taking the only wicket of the match. The sun was out now and burning down and the weather looked set for a great day. Players were queuing up to field in the heat and cover the ground normally occupied by 11 fielders, not six|!! Robert Dunn returned to the playing arena with his brother Owen. The took on the father and son partnership of Richard and Michael Robertson. They didn't lose a wicket either on the way to 138. The Robertson's were totally at home. The wicket could have been prepared for them. Michael was in fine form striking the ball majestically. It was an easy win in the Reed derby with Michael and Richard reaching 160-0 Andy Goodship and Baz Curtis were trying to break their duck and win a game for the first time. They had to face another one of the favourites John and James Heslam. Andy and Baz looked set for a decent score until 4 wickets in the last over bowled by the cagey John Heslam saw them dive to 119-4. The [...]
