Headlines – 13th / 14th August

SATURDAY: It was a day for chasing which turned out to be 75% successful! Unfortunately, the 1st XI were the 25% unsuccessful portion. Having kept Hoddesdon to 191, four of the wickets to Toby Fynn, Reed's chase ended just 12 runs short at 179. Mitchell Cooper scored a fifty and Will Heslam 37. Back on The Green, Julien Fynn went one better than his brother by taking 5 Hertford wickets in their 192 for 9. Two of Reed's silkiest batsmen, Richard Johnson and Ed Garrott, then recorded half-centuries as the Seconds won by 8 wickets. There was a welcome victory up at Freman College when the Thirds overhauled St Albans' 154 all-out with 3 wickets intact. Zac Conley's 34 was top-score but Mike Robertson and Ben Moody chipped-in with twenties in their mission to avoid the "dreaded dotted line of demotion". Martin "Ton-up" Johnson broke records whilst compiling a third successive hundred in the 4th XI's fixture against Letchworth. All his centuries have been undefeated and this effort was supported by veterans Garrott, P and Baker, P, in using just 30 overs to chase-down Letchworth's mammoth 274 for 6. Whilst the wickets had been shared round, most satisfying were the two wickets deservedly taken by the persistent Steve Hughes. He bowled the high-scoring Pond for "only" 130 this time - in the previous encounter, Pond had scored 230. SUNDAY: Chasing runs again. Despite MJE Baker's 71, Reed's "Friendly" XI were all-out for 172 and were 95 runs behind at the end of the match against Ashwell. Ah well! Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB.

The Family Hughes claim 6 for 26 from a combined 9 overs in Reed win on Sunday

Having lost to Aston earlier in the season playing away, it was nice to get some revenge when it came to Reed's turn to host. Asked to bowl first Reed attacked with the pace of Joe Graves coming down the hill and applied the pressure with Neil Haslam coming up. Haslam made the breakthrough whilst Graves was unlucky not to come away with a wicket despite some fine bowling. Rhodri Hughes may have been surprised to be asked to be first change bowler but it proved an inspired move as his three-over spell produced three fantastic wickets. Cormac Hosie and Sam Rice then bowled in tandem during the middle overs. Both got the ball to spin and made trouble for the Aston batsman. Hosie unfortunately went wicketless whilst Rice claimed 2 for 27. Owen and Steve Hughes then finished things off for Reed, Owen claiming 2 for 5 and Steve 1 for 7. With a target of 170 Reed needed a good start. Jack Childs and veteran Peter Baker started well and were beginning to look settled for a long partnership. Unfortunately Howes bowled Childs for 15, followed swiftly by two more cheap wickets. Reed captain Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease at 33 for 3 but soon lost his father for 21. Needing help in restarting the Reed innings Rhodri Hughes duly provided the support. Both played smart cricket as they put on 61 for fifth wicket. Looking to up the ante R. Hughes (14) tried a slog sweep that brought about his downfall. Replacing him was younger brother Owen. Looking in fine touch he played a patient innings. Playing the drive and cut well in particular he helped Reed get over the [...]

Reed’s Yo-Yo season continues

Reed 1st XI hosted Langleybury 1st XI at home on Saturday. Langleybury won the toss and opted to bat first. Reed's opening bowler Ed Wharton (10-4-24-2) stormed in and had opener Corran caught behind by Sean Tidey in the third over, leaving Langleybury 10 for 1. A solid stand of 41 then developed between R.Soulsby (51) and N.Amin (19) before Wharton bowled Amin for 19. Soulsby continued with S.Knox (19) taking the score to 95 for 3 after 28 overs. Tom Greaves (15-4-37-3) brought himself into the attack and soon had Knox LBW followed by W.Oxley (5). Meanwhile Alex Mutucumarana (12.4-51-51-5) was brought into the attack bowling his leg spin and quickly got rid of A.Gunning (10). Greaves and Mutucumarana then ran through the rest of the Langleybury batting order leaving them 173 all out in 49.4 overs. Reed were left with 65 overs to chase down the Langleybury total which should have been very gettable with no demons apparent in the pitch. However Langleybury bowled very tightly and Reed struggled to find the boundary and were 15 of 0 after 7 overs. William Heslam (5) soon fell to T.Brall and Tom Greaves followed soon after. James Heslam (38) then put on a stand of 30 with Chris Jackson (19) and Reed looked in control, but Jackson then got out with the score on 54 followed by S. Tidey and Mutucumarana without troubling the scorer and Reed were in trouble at 54 for 5. Ed Wharton kept Reed's hopes alive with a cultured 25, but when he went the tail folded and Reed were bowled out for 97 with 35 overs remaining. The main damage was done by R.Oxley (8.5-1-33-4) and M.Corran (8-3-27-4) who both [...]

Johnson enjoys another day in the sun

Captain Bowman won the toss and invited Old Owens to bat. It was a toil in the field, with the opening batsmen making slow but steady progress, with their top 4 all getting starts of 17, 35, 36 and 58 (not out). Only 4 wickets fell in the innings, as Old Owens reached 178 in 42 overs. This was helped by some dropped catches in the field, and a few decisions being given in favour of the batsmen. The bowling was shared around 7 players, with Martin Johnson returning the best figures (8-1-29-2). Reed changed wicketkeepers at the drinks interval with Ward taking over from Bowman behind the stumps. After tea, supplied by the Bowman family and taken in the fresh air under the Freman gazebo, Reed started slowly but steadily just like Old Owens. Peter Baker preferring to score in singles and Johnson preferring to hit the odd boundary. Many times were the Baker call of “one run” heard this afternoon. The first wicket fell at 129 in the 23rd over, with Baker (43) being caught off the bowling of Tyler, having found the boundary 4 times but playing a good support role to Johnson. Johnson meantime had reached his 50 and batted on to finish 101 not out. His innings included thirteen 4s and three 6s, although he was given a few chances being dropped 3 times during his innings. Ward (one ear listening for that phone call) ensuring Johnson reached his hundred after hitting 10 in two boundary shots. Johnson having just returned from 2 weeks’ holiday. Reed won the game in the 32nd over, reaching 179 for the loss of only two wickets at the “Freman Oval”. Report submitted by Steve [...]

Headlines – 6th / 7th August

SATURDAY: Not a day to write home about. The 1sts, 2nds and 3rds all lost although the 4ths won gloriously at Freman College! The Firsts at home to Langleybury managed only 97 all-out in reply to 173. James Heslam top-scored with 38 and Ed Wharton made 25 but it was all rather disappointing after Alex Mutucumarana had taken 5 visitors' wickets for 51. In the exchange fixture at Langleybury, Reed's 2nd XI could only muster a below par 112 which the hosts knocked-off with just 2 wickets down. Julien Fynn, Mike Catt and Phil Frenay were Reed's main contributors with the bat. The Thirds were outplayed at Harpenden by being ousted for 122 and not being able to take a wicket as they lost by 10 wickets. Mike Robertson made 31 and Paul Garrott 23 in the Reed innings. Old Owens batted first at the Freman Oval and lost just 4 wickets totalling 178 in their full quota of overs. Peter Baker (43) and Martin Johnson replied with an opening stand of 125 before Johnson saw it through to the end, reaching an undefeated 101 when the winning runs were scored. SUNDAY: Rhodri Hughes took 3 for 14 in Aston's innings of 169 for 9. After tea, Marcus Baker was not out 57 and Owen Hughes undefeated on 30 when the winning runs were scored with 5 wickets intact. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

HEART SCREENING DAY, 17th SEPTEMBER 2016

Message sent on behalf of Andrew Emms, President, Reed Cricket Club. The CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) mobile screening unit will be at Reed Cricket Club pavilion all day on the 17th September, and all members between the ages of 14-35 years of age, together with siblings of similar ages, are invited to attend, in order that they may be screened to ascertain that they do not have any heart defects. The sad facts show that 12 young people collapse and die EVERY WEEK in the UK from a previously undiagnosed heart condition, which, had they been screened, would have been picked up and acted upon immediately. Rarely during these screenings, do the medical teams fail to find at least one person who needs further treatment. On the 17th September it is hoped 100 young people will be screened and by now all Club Members and parents of Colts should have received an email inviting you to register and to book a slot. After Reed CC members and their siblings have registered, we will then open screening up to other young people in the village of Reed and the surrounding district. PLEASE register AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, as these screenings are always massively oversubscribed, and we don’t want any members / families to be disappointed. IF YOU HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO REGISTER, PLEASE GO TO www.reedcricketclub.co.uk Choose CONTACT US then EMAIL US. Instructions how to register with CRY will be sent once we have received your request. CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG has been Reed CC’s chosen charity for the last 2 years and the funds raised during this period have enabled this screening to be free of charge to all, [...]

“Call of Duty! Is it waning? Is it fair to expect?”

John Heslam writes:- As we move into August another Cricket season is rapidly moving towards its close, and if we want to be frank it hasn’t been a great season at Reed! Most of our League teams currently seem to be achieving “mid-table mediocrity”, bar our hard pressed, and hard done by, 3rd XI for which that would, at this stage, be an achievement! Our midweek Cricket has been abandoned and dispensed with and now does not exist – withdrawal from a newly established midweek League without playing a single match (!), and letting down a touring side by failing to honour a booked and agreed fixture. Pretty shameful stuff! Sunday 1st XI Cricket focuses on the National Village Cup where we threw away an excellent chance of making another Lord's Final with a below par display at the last 16 stage. Add this to barely tolerated appearances (or non-appearances!) in the Herts 20/20 competition. Sunday 2nd XI Cricket is one of the few thriving and well-supported areas of our Club's current operations. This current weekend has been a nightmare for selection and availability – unfortunately not for the first time this season – and when one sees 3rd XI players volunteering to act as “fodder” to make up a Herts Championship 1st XI, and pro-rata selection quandaries littering all the other teams, then it is indeed a miracle (well done to Lloyd Bowman – AGAIN!) that we managed to actually put out a 4th XI on Saturday. Saturday's weak teams, subsequent below performances, and poor results beyond the 1st XI, might have put paid to our 2nd XI’s chances of another promotion, and might have sealed the further relegation of our 3rd XI? Time [...]

Thank you from Reed Parochial Church Council

Extract from a letter of thanks sent to Andrew Emms, President, Reed CC dated 1st August, 2016. Dear Andrew, I am writing on behalf of the Reed Parochial Church Council. We are very grateful to you and the Cricket Club for producing such a wonderful floral window display for our Flower Festival. Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had some wonderful comments about the whole weekend and we hope you enjoyed it too. The window displays were all so individual and really told a story about each organisation. It was great to see all our organisations represented so imaginatively and all in one place! I’m also delighted to be able to report that we have raised over £1,000 for our church, so a massive thank you to everyone in the Cricket Club and their families and friends for supporting this special weekend. With best wishes Jenny Wisdom
