A poor result despite promising performances

A weekend of incredibly poor availability for a variety of legitimate reasons meant that the two’s hosted St Albans with a weaker than usual side. However, Tim Tidey skippering the side preferred to look at the situation as a fantastic opportunity for a number of talented players to prove themselves at a higher standard. Jack Caine (12) and Richard Johnson (13) opened the Reed innings and were just starting to make their mark when Johnson edged behind a good delivery giving the visitors their first wicket. Two more soon followed leaving Reed struggling at 35 for 3. Marcus J.E. Baker came out at number 5 to join Reed's 14 year old protégé Mike Catt. The pair was patient in waiting for the bad balls to pick up their runs and gradually with some time a partnership began to form. The young Mike Catt was certainly impressing with a display of good technique and temperament. Baker eventually started to bludgeon a few balls to the boundary and was looking set for a big and dominant innings when the slightest of edges was taken behind with Baker walking back to the pavilion for 29. Catt continued his steady innings before unexpectedly missing one, leaving the field also for 29. Only George Garrott (12) and Pete Tidey (12*) made it into double figures as Reed's innings ended well short of a par score on 134. Going all out to take ten wickets Reed's young fielders put in a dedicated and spirited performance in support of their bowlers. Poor reply leaves the Thirds well adrift

Reed III versus Luton Town & Indians IV at Freman College on Saturday 30th July 2016. Luton Town & Indians batsmen never really cashed-in on the notoriously high-scoring Freman Oval pitch and although five of them passed 20, none reached 40. In fact, their final total of 231 all-out was well below par. James Crouchman, Brenden Salter and Josh Conley found success with the ball by taking two wickets each, and Neil Haslam (1 for 39 off 13 overs) was economic in comparison to an overall rate of 4.6 runs per over. Remarkably, Reed’s fielders held on to 8 catches whilst none were dropped. Initially excited at having a “gettable” target, Reed soon found themselves in trouble at 19 for 2. From there, they couldn’t put together a partnership that would have been crucial to the cause. Crouchman was top-scorer with 19 and Salter, J. Conley and Ben Moody were the only other ones to record double figures. LTICC used only two bowlers throughout. Seamer Rickesh Patel taking 6 for 43 and Rahul Patel 4 for 38 with his leg-breaks. Garrott steadying influence throughout the innings h

Reed IV were inserted by Preston with an immediate reward, Matt Yates (0) falling second ball. Paul Garrott (89) was a steadying influence throughout the innings being the last wicket to fall, which then resulted in a declaration. Bill Mansfield (18) and Lloyd Bowman (23) were the only other batmen to enter double digits. Mansfield was unlucky, caught on the boundary as the fielder reached overhead. Garrott and Bowman having a mid-innings stand of 49. Runs were always being hard to collect with only 17 boundaries and Reed finishing on 179 for 8 off 40.4 overs. We have to thank Preston for a sumptuous tea. If runs were hard to collect, so were wickets, Yates and Ed Kershaw opened the bowling and were economical with 39 off the first 11 overs. A change of bowling, saw Steve Hughes collect the wicket of the Preston captain with his first ball. With young Cormac Hosie (5-0-33-1) collecting a wicket in his last over, just displacing the bail. Meanwhile Hughes (12-1-33-3) was bowling economical from the other end, collecting 2 more wickets, one thanks to a catch at mid-off by Bowman. Jack Wilkerson (4-0-19-0) and Sam Rice (4-0-21-0) both had short spells, but remained wicket less. Yates (9-2-20-1) returned for 2 overs and collected a deserved wicket, giving Mansfield his second catch of the game behind the wickets. The game finished as a draw with Preston being 157 for 5 at the close of the match. An enjoyable match, played in a very good spirit, with Reed certainly having the younger side and earning some needed league points. Headlines – 30th July

SATURDAY: A welcome win for the Firsts who regained the initiative after being 6 for 3 chasing Hemel Hempstead's 135 all-out. Chris Jackson scored a fifty backed-up by Alex Mutucumarana cracking thirty to win by 5 wickets. In the Hemel innings, Tom Greaves had taken four wickets. The match at Reed between the Seconds and St Albans went the other way. This time, Reed were bundled out for 134, joint top-scorers being Mike Catt and MJE Baker each with 29. St Albans lost only 3 wickets in knocking-off the target. At Freman, the Thirds did remarkably well by bowling Luton Town & Indians out for a below par 231. There were 2 wickets apiece for James Crouchman, Josh Conley and Brenden Salter. Unfortunately, Reed were dismissed within 23 overs for only 94; Crouchman top-scorer with 19. The Fourths had the better part of a draw versus Preston. Batting first, Reed reached 179 for 8 before declaring; Paul Garrott made 89 and Lloyd Bowman 23. Garrott Gets Reed Going

George Garrott put in a crucial performance with the ball to get Reed back to winning ways. The victory released a measure of the tension that has been building with recent results not going in Reed's favour. The toss won, Marcus Martin elected to bat first and let hosts Hemel Hempstead suffer under the hot July sun. However, it was Reeds opening batsman who were feeling the heat as the opening salvos had them in trouble. The loss of a wicket brought Reed's vice-captain Phil Frenay to the crease who stamped his authority on the match with an almighty biff down the ground first ball. There on, the partnership of Frenay and prolific batsman Richard Johnson added 66 attacking runs. Johnson’s loss for 29 brought Martin to the crease who wasted little time in scoring runs as he and his deputy added a further 44 to the cause. The introduction of spin proved a crucial factor as Frenay was bowled for 49. For a time Martin had to be patient and wait for the bad ball. Things were turning in Reed's favour when Martin’s captain's knock ended, chopping on for 45. Injecting some energy into Reed's innings was the ever-enthusiastic Rhodri Hughes whose unique style proved perfect for the situation. He and the talented all-rounder Jack Caine ran rings around Hemel with quick and daring running and boundary hitting. It was an impressive display of youthful confidence and fitness. Caine (22) and Hughes (29) took Reed to a final score of 237 for 8. An early wicket to Pete Tidey removed Hemel’s captain. President’s Day, Sunday 31st July

PRESIDENT'S DAY - SUNDAY 31ST JULY 2016. A message from Club President Andrew Emms. This year President’s Day will have a different feel to it, in that we are not combining a charity lunch with the cricket; I felt that we have raised the monies required to fund the Heart Screening on September 17th, (see Reed CC website for further information), and I also felt that your generosity in supporting this and previous initiatives should not be taken for granted! So, on President’s Day we will be staging a Double Wicket Competition, which will commence at 11am approx. This consists of pairs of players, competing extremely energetically, in a knockout competition to produce a grand final between the 2 most successful pairs from which the Champions will emerge. A Barbecue will run through the day, and tea will be provided for the players. Matt Bowles, Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey are organising the playing side of things, so any queries contact them for further details. Hopefully the weather will be kind and an enjoyable day will be had by all. ALL PAST AND PRESENT MEMBERS ARE WELCOME, TOGETHER WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS, AS WELL AS SUPPORTERS, AND RESIDENTS OF REED. Top-of-the-table Letchworth defeat Reed

Reed 1st XI hosted top of the table Letchworth Garden City in the Herts Premier League Championship on Saturday July 23rd. Reed captain Tom Greaves won the toss and opted to bat on a hot day on the flattest of tracks. However, tight Letchworth bowling saw Reed score at 3 an over for the first 50 overs for 3 wickets down. Brothers William, (64), and James Heslam, (57), both contributed well, but Reed were unable to kick-on in the middle overs and found themselves having to accelerate in the last ten. Sean Tidey, (20 not out), and Mitchell Cooper, (20), both scored quickly to take Reed to 238 for 7 off their allotted 60 overs. However this was clearly going to be a difficult total for Reed to defend. In reply, Letchworth got off to a rapid start, but Reed had Aitchenhead, (12), caught Tidey, bowled Ed Wharton in the fourth over with Letchworth on 22. Chahal, (35), and Bates, (51), then rebuilt the innings with a stand of 45, taking them to 81 for two in the 17th over. This brought hard-hitting Maxwell Pipe to the crease who proceeded to score 78 not out and take Letchworth over the line in 50 overs with 5 overs to spare. Ed Wharton (16 overs, 1 maiden, 4 wickets for 72 runs) tried his heart out, supported by Tom Greaves (12-0-2-49), but in between too many loose balls were bowled by the five other bowlers used and Letchworth cruised to victory thanks to Pipe's powerful stroke play. The “Honey Monster” completes a super all-round weekend as Josh takes 4 for 5!

Reed Sunday XI versus Forest Gate CC at Reed on Sunday 24th July 2016. When 3 deliveries from Joe Graves’s first over had disappeared to the boundary it looked like it would be a long, hard afternoon in the field for the Reed Sunday XI. Fortunately, Josh Conley, fresh from his batting heroics of the previous day, kept tighter lines and the run-rate was immediately halved to just 6-an-over after two! More free-scoring shots by Yashin peppered the field and Forest Gate’s opening stand progressed to 26. Suddenly, that became the bogey score as Conley took 2 wickets and Graves 1 without addition to the total. Young Cormac Hosie was introduced into the attack and his leg-breaks accounted for 2 more visiting batsmen with another going to Conley then a couple falling to Sammy Rice. Seven Foresters were clean-bowled seemingly trying to make boundary shots when perhaps a more circumspect approach would have been more beneficial. This left them at a vulnerable 65 for 8. Then Mahmood, the number 4 who had watched helplessly at the non-striker’s end as the wickets had tumbled was given some welcome support by number 10, Irfan. However, Neil Haslam had him top-edging to Marcus Baker at mid-wicket for 26 when the score became 97 for 9. Last man, T. Khan also supported Mahmood in a final stand of 40 bringing them to a more challenging 137 all-out once Conley had returned to remove Mahmood for 49. Astonishingly, Conley’s statistics were 4 wickets for a mere 5 runs from 6.2 overs. Once watered and fed, Reed’s teen-aged opening pair of Jack Childs and Mike Catt made batting look easy. Frustrating hot afternoon for Reed 4th XI

Captain Lloyd Bowman won the toss and asked Potters Bar to bat. The 10 Reed cricketers took the field on a hot afternoon. The opening pair of Matt Yates (4-1-14-0) and Jack Childs (18 runs from 7 overs) restricted the run rate, with both openers finding scoring difficult, which was to be the ongoing trend for this match. Because he was carrying an injury, Yates was replaced by Neil Haslam. The experienced Haslam was economical in his first spell of the afternoon conceding 21 from 8 overs. One of the opening batsmen retired halfway through the innings, feeling unwell. Meanwhile Steve Hughes had started his spell, again restricting the run flow and picking up 3 wickets for 43 from 12 overs, the first from a low full toss that the batsman hit firmly to Yates at mid-on to take a good catch. Bill Mansfield took a sharp low catch behind the wicket to give Hughes his second wicket. At 25 overs, the score was 65-2, then 104-4 at 32 overs. Ben Mansfield did a brilliant job in the outfield, restricting the batsmen to singles with his energy and accurate throws. Toby Emes replaced Haslam and took 2 wickets for 26 from 5 overs, one being Bowman taking a good (almost diving) catch in the covers. Haslam returned to finish off his overs ending with 0 for 50 from 12. Childs took the last wicket to fall producing figures of (9-2-23-1) and Potters Bar finished on 162 for 6 off their full 42 overs. Thirds thwarted in run-chase at the Freman Oval

Reed III versus Hertford IV at Freman College on Saturday 23rd July 2016. Hertford’s openers, Page, (67), and Mohanmurthy, (22), set-off at 6 an over in a partnership of 78 as Reed ‘s bowlers struggled to find their lines and lengths. Mohammed, Spring and Riddle, (72,) continued the onslaught until the declaration came in the 49th over when the score was 293 for 7. Having maintained a run-a-ball throughout their innings, the standout figures of veteran swinger, Ian Roberts, were marvellous. He returned 3 batsmen to the pavilion for only 18 runs off 8 overs, (that is just 2.25 runs per over). Faced with a massive target, but knowing that the Freman Oval pitch is fast-paced and high-scoring, Reed were undaunted and Rob Willoughby again powered his way past fifty. But with a swap-over between their young all-rounders, Jack Timms and Tom Orchard who shared wicket-keeping and bowling roles and accounted for 5 wickets between them, Reed found themselves at 98 for 7 with Willoughby out for 66. Then came a major recovery. First, Joe Graves, (26), supported skipper, Michael Robertson batting at number 9, and added 76 for the 8th wicket before becoming the third of Pizzey’s 3 wickets. The left-handed Robertson hit 7 boundaries and 2 sixes in his first 50 runs and was then joined by Josh Conley. In an amazing Third XI record-breaking 9th wicket partnership, Conley outscored his captain in their 11 overs together and registered his maiden half-century. His 53 included 6 fours and 3 sixes and when he was bowled by Mohammed, Reed required just 16 for victory from 4 further overs.
