Saturday 1sts: In spite of two fiery spells by Ed Wharton giving him a 5 fer, Letchworth overtook Reed's total of 195 in a heavy drizzle to win by 2 wickets. Earlier the bulk of Reed's runs had come from Will Heslam (36), Richard Wharton (32) and Tom Greaves (21). Saturday 2nds: Richard Johnson avoided the jug by contriving to be run-out for a super 93 in the 8-run victory over Hemel. George Garrott took 3 wickets in the 2nd innings as Reed's total of 256 was in peril of being overhauled but fortunately the last wicket fell with just 3 balls remaining. After three matches, Reed are now in their accustomed position at the top-of-the-table! Saturday 3rds: There was no repetition of last week's run-chase win when the same two last wicket partners of Joe "Digger" Graves and Neil Haslam were at the crease at Balls Park. Maseeh Naeem hit 64 and Julien Fynn (31) to put Reed in touch with a 111-run partnership but Hertford fought back to win by 6 runs. Earlier, Hertford were bowled out for 223 with Graves and Jason Pallett taking 3 wickets each. Saturday 4ths: Potters Bar were dispatched for a lowly 108 at the Freman Oval, the wickets being shared around between Jake Gifford 2, Martin Johnson 2, Steve Hughes 2, Bill Mansfield 3 and Jonny Adam 1. Even shorter work was made with the bat as Martin Johnson, 49, Kieren Willoughby 34 not out and Mansfield biffed their way to 110 for 1 in just 12 overs. My Grandmother was a product of the early 20th century, and was renowned in our family for her “wise old sayings”. My own children will confirm these were often repeated in our home as they grew up, and many have thus passed down another generation. “A stitch in time saves nine” – but who stitches anything these “Primark” days! “Better Safe than Sorry!” – the forerunner of the Health and Safety Executive! “A Bird in the Hand is worth two in the bush”, “Charity begins at Home!”, “Blood is thicker than water”, There’s no point crying over spilt milk”, “Like father like son!”, “You may as well be hung for a sheep as a Lamb!”. “Spare the rod and spoil the Child” – Shock Horror! - ring for the Welfare Officer and Social Services!! “You’re only as young as the woman you feel” – or have I got that one wrong? I have been specifically reminded of several of the old sayings in these first few weeks of the Cricket season when our Club has limped, rather than burst, into life in terms of player availability. Despite the herculean and laudable efforts of last years new skipper Lloyd Bowman, some of us have at times debated whether we really have the depth of playing numbers to operate a Saturday League 4th Xl. Lloyd went well above and beyond the call of duty to get together the teams to meet last years fixtures and not only that – he managed to win the 4th Xl League with them!! Huge chase ends in Victory!

Reed III's hosted Northwood Town II's at Freman Oval for the second league game of the season. On winning the toss Reed elected to bowl. Joe Graves (10-1-42-1) bowled consistent pacey outswing picking up a wicket early on. George Garrott (10-1-44-1) took the other opener's wicket just as he was getting in to his stride. A partnership developed between Haji (43) and Vanker (87*), but was broken when a skillful deflection onto the stumps, by Ian Roberts, found Haji out of his crease. Northwood Town continued to increase their total, but lost Palan (3), Kotetcha (22) and M. Patel (1) in the process. Khetia (29*) and Vanker finished the innings undefeated with Northwood Town posting a massive 274 for 6 from their 50 overs. Reed's response started well as Rob Willoughby (71) and Rhodri Hughes (39) plundered runs. Hughes was caught off the bowling of Kotetcha (9-1-61-2) and Peter Baker (0) fell quickly to Patel (10-1-30-2), bringing George Garrott to the crease, who freely played strokes and pushed the total on until Willoughby became Patel's second victim. Mike Robertson (33) continued the support for Garrott as he struck boundaries to all parts of the ground, when Robertson fell, Matt Bowles (14) continued, however the nerves were beginning to set in. Garrott and Bowles both ran themselves out and Mas Naeem (10) after a brief flurry was bowled by Kotetcha. Ian Roberts (4) was also run out, and with the scores close, Joe Graves (7*) and Neil Haslam (0) were tasked with finishing the job. It was the youngster Graves who struck the final blow, beautifully dispatching a low full toss to the boundary to give Reed the victory. Report submitted by Michael Robertson.

Brave Reed fall to Baldock III

After promotion last season, Reed IV’s began their season away to Baldock III at Weston Cricket Club. A much changed side from last season’s league winners gave opportunity to five of the current U15 colts to make their open-age league cricket debuts. Skipper Bowman won the toss and elected to bowl. Matt Yates and Jack Wilkerson opened up the bowling ,and both bowled well, before Yates (7-0-41-1) made the breakthrough following a good catch by Kieran Willoughby in the covers, leaving Baldock 45-1. The introduction of Steve Hughes (8-0-33-4) saw 3 wickets tumble in quick succession, including a sharp catch behind from Bowman. Jake Gifford (6-2-22-1) also bowled well and claimed his first wicket in adult cricket. In the final few overs the tight bowling of Martin Johnson (3-1-2-0) and determination of young colt Jonathan Adam (4.3-0-29-3) saw Reed bowl out Baldock for 174 off 34.3 overs. Reed opened with Willoughby and Johnson, the latter was lost early for 3 which brought Bill Mansfield to the crease. Willoughby (16) hit several shots to the boundary and looked in good nick, until he went for one shot too many and was bowled by Rist (8-1-9-3). Two more quick wickets were lost and Reed were looking shaky at 34-4 from the first 10 overs. Mansfield (18) and Bowman set about trying to solidify the innings and dug in to resist the Baldock spin attack. When Mansfield was lost for 18, Bowman managed to hang around until the 28th over to drag the score to 87, before being caught trying to speed things up for 14. There were useful contributions further down the order from Gifford (13) and Hughes (7) which managed to gain Reed a batting point [...]

Sean took Reed over the line in a game that seemed to be slipping away

Reed edged a tight game against Dunstable by 3 wickets as the match see-sawed backwards and forwards. Dunstable were 131-3 with Essex 2nd XI player Ali (26) and Guy Hill (63) leading the charge, but new skipper, Tom Greaves (8-2-26-5) took 5 wickets for 7 runs and with Alex Mutucumarana taking the last two, they were all out for 143. Reed built their innings steadily with Chris Jackson top scoring on 33, but they too suffered a collapse from 106-3 to 117-7 until Sean Tidey's lusty knock of 20 from 17 balls, supported by Ed Wharton saw them home with 10 overs to spare. Headlines – 14th / 15th May

Saturday 1sts: Steady innings by CJ plus lusty knocks from Sean Tidey grabbed the victory against Dunstable after skipper, Tom, took a 5-fer! Saturday 2nds lost the double-header against Dunstable by 21 runs. Matt Sampson bagged 3 wickets in the first innings and Jack Caine was 36 not out at the end, but it wasn't enough. Saturday 3rds: Rob Willoughby (71) and Rhodri Hughes got the Thirds off to a flyer. George Garrott reached the eighties and useful knocks down the order meant the target of 275 was overhauled with 4 overs to spare in thrilling match. Saturday 4ths kicked-off their league campaign with a loss to Baldock on their out-ground at Weston by 56 runs. Nevertheless, the predominantly young side battled well with rewards of 4 wickets for Steve Hughes and 3 for Jonny Adam. Sunday, Village Cup: Centuries by William Heslam (135 not out) and Richard Wharton (129 not out) put Reed out of Bromham's reach in totalling a massive 329 for 2 in their 40 overs. Three wickets each from Reece Fitzgerald and Tom Greaves plus two by Stuart "out-of-the-sun" Smith nailed it as Reed romped home by 148 runs. Expect match reports to follow shortly. PGB

How does he do it? ‘Rooty’ 122 not out and 3 for 1 helps in Reed victory

It was a warm and beautiful day at Reed headquarters as Woodcutters made their annual journey to play at The Green. Both sides had struggled to put out their strongest sides, none the less it was a fantastically enjoyable game. Reed were inserted by the visitors and quickly got the scoreboard ticking over. Peter Baker and Bill Mansfield both put the bad balls away as they made a quick 46 run partnership. John Kershaw replaced Baker (20) who had been bowled by one that kept a bit low. He too plundered runs as the boundaries were came thick and fast. On 47 Bill Mansfield tried taking the aerial route once too many times and was caught as the first drinks were taken after 15 overs with the score on 91. Things did not get better for Woodcutters as Rob Lankester strode to the crease. Playing with his now famous patience and skill he found scoring no trouble. A fine knock of 46 by John Kershaw finished when he was trapped LBW. Joe Graves coming in at 5 took the opportunity afforded to him to demonstrate his improved ability with the bat. He and Lankester put on 67 together in a tremendous partnership. Joe was caught for 20 just as the second drinks were taken, the score now 219 for 4 in the 30th. Lankester just did not stop. He persisted in his stylish stroke making and brought up three figures with one of his 22 boundaries. He would finish the innings undefeated with 122 runs to his name, an incredible effort that took Reed to their final total of 283 for 5. Shaky Start for the 3’s

Reed III’s got off to an unconvincing start to the league season, losing to Pirton in a one-sided game. Due to last-minute drop-outs, Reed could only field 10 men. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, hoping to post a big total to offset the visitors, however this was not to be the case, the Reed batsmen scored fairly freely, taking advantage of the fast outfield, however wickets fell fairly frequently, Robert Willoughby (63) and Chris West (45) put on a good show, both hitting the ball cleanly and continually frustrating the Pirton bowlers, however Reed failed to build big partnerships, ending up all out for 166 in just 30.5 overs. Pirton’s response had a shaky start with opener Laskowski falling to Neil Haslam’s (6-0-40-1) first ball. This was to be the only wicket Reed would take as Clarke (33*) supported the aggressive Howard (112*) who continually smashed boundaries. The torrent of runs could have been allayed but Reed did not take the chances when they came, failing to hold on to a number of catches. In the end Pirton took just 18.3 overs to reach the target.
