Bad day at the office for 1st XI

With only final league standings to play for Reed 1xi suffered a heavy defeat away to Langleybury. The toss was crucial on a bowler friendly track from the week’s rain that appeared as if it had not been effectively covered during some of that time and the home side won this and had no hesitation putting Reed into bat. Runs were hard to come by with the ball not coming onto the bat and biting in the pitch made more difficult by some very accurate Langleybury bowling. Will Heslam went for the first of three reed ducks and although James Heslam and promising looking new signing Matt Sampson dug in to take the score to 29-1 this was at a slow rate. Unfortunately James Heslam (7) and Sampson (10) then went in quick succession looking to start to accelerate the score. Although Chris Jackson (25) and Tom Greaves (7) settled well to take Reed to 53-3 once Greaves went Reed suffered a bad collapse with only Jack Tidey (13) getting in at all. The innings subsided to 82 all out off 39 overs. In reply the Langleybury openers rode their luck a little but chasing a small total played pretty well and positively to secure the win. Jack Tidey (6-0-24) and Phil Lill (2-0-3) were the pick of the Reed bowlers on a day to forget. Reed’s final game is at home to Stevenage. A win will see them finish 4th or 5th and a defeat could mean 6th, either way a mid-table finish seems a fair reflection on a tricky season in a competitive division.

Fourths wrap-up the title

Reed 4s last League match of the season took them to the scenic ground of St Christopher's School in Letchworth to face Stevenage 6s. Skipper Lloyd Bowman's run of winning the toss came to an end and the Stevenage skipper put the visitors into bat. Reed opened with Bill Mansfield and Martin Johnson and they immediately began to assert themselves against the young Stevenage bowling attack. Both batsman played a variety of shots around the ground as they raced to 63 off the first 12 overs. The introduction of off-spinner C.Downing provided Stevenage with their first wicket, forcing a false shot off of Mansfield on 41 and the ball was caught at mid-wicket (63-1). Neil Gardner returning after nearly four years now joined Johnson and despite that time gap didn't look out-of-place. The pair had taken the score to 87 when Gardner tried to cut a ball that was too close to him and was bowled by A.Greenall for 7 (87-2). Enter Zac Conley back after a four-week absence and immediately went on the offensive punishing balls of good length as well as any short or wide, Johnson was getting in on the act too, and the pair increased the run rate. Johnson was the first to reach his fifty and three overs later Conley brought up his. The Stevenage skipper had no option but to shuffle his bowlers against the onslaught. The 150, then the 100 partnership were brought up and at 30 overs Reed were 210 for 2 and a massive total was beckoning. By this time Conley had overtaken Johnson and on the pair went. They reached 250 in the 34th Over and in the 37th had established a record 3rd Wicket [...]

Headlines – 29th / 30th August

The calculations have been made and we can definitely say that both the Seconds and the Fourths will be promoted as Champions of their respective divisions. They cannot now be overhauled. Well-done to all players who have represented these teams in this very successful season. The Firsts were all-out for a mere 82 away versus Langleybury, Chris Jackson top-scoring with 25. But the Bury knocked off the target without losing a wicket. The Seconds, skippered this week by Phil Frenay, managed only 165 all-out, runs mainly coming from Rob Lankester supported by Matt Bowles, but the bowling department shared the wickets as Cockfosters were bowled out for 131 giving Reed a 34-run victory. Jack Caine bowled 8 overs and conceded just 7 runs. In 2016, the Seconds will be in Division 4B. On paper, the Thirds had a strong and experienced batting line-up. But in the end replied to Hertford's 204 for 9 with only 144. John Kershaw was 46 not out trying to reach that extra batting point, but it was all in vain. Now that the results are in, it is sad to report that the Thirds failed to score sufficient points to avoid relegation so next season they will be playing in Division 8B. Over at St Christopher's School in Letchworth, Lloyd Bowman's Fourth team ended their league programme by racking-up an astonishing 335 all-out in their 45 overs. Zac Conley registered his third ton of the season scoring 127, Martin Johnson scored 88 and Bill Mansfield chipped-in with 41. Neil Haslam claimed 3 wickets as Stevenage ended on 147 all-out. Regional Division B East beckons for the Fourths next year. For those not on Tour, Richard Barlow arranged a Conference fixture [...]

“Cricketing Ethic flounders in confusion – and why our “Jonno” needs to play International Cricket!”

Ageing Colonels and other “old boys” who enjoy watching our great sport at various levels have been choking on their sherries for many years now as the structure, rules and past ethics of the game are dismantled at the very top, and much of the resulting debris provides unnecessary fallout and confusion much further down the great games performance levels. “The Umpire is always right!” has of course been a misnomer for as long as the game has existed, but by and large it was accepted as a mantra, however reluctantly, and however many tongues were being bitten!! Of course Umpires have not always been right, some have been downright cheats, but in recent years with the advent of DRS at the highest, most visible levels of our game, the phrase has been totally devalued. Cricket Officialdom (at levels below international Cricket) still insist that Umpiring decisions are afforded unflinching acceptance and respect, even when their confusing actions provoke unnecessary controversy. (Rein yourself in Mr Chairman!). However at International Level it is all so different. The Umpire is always right, until DRS proves him “Wrong” (unless you are playing India!). The Umpire could be “Wrong” but is still declared “Right” if the DRS fractional analysis eventually declares the incident to be “Umpires Call”. Additionally, the Umpire could be “Right” on the decision, but then the whole issue is declared void because the bowler has overstepped the popping crease and a “No Ball” is declared as an afterthought! This latter issue occurs very frequently at the moment because the Umpires (who are always right) no longer choose to pay deference to, or implement, the front foot No Ball rule of the game they are adjudicating! They will [...]

1st XIs faint promotion hopes ended

The 1st XI lost out in a close game to Chorleywood on Saturday as they were unable to match the high standards they have set in the recent excellent run. On a scorching day the visitors won the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bat. Although Toby Fynn (10-39-1) took an early wicket Chorleywood got off to a reasonable start on what looked a decent batting wicket as they reached 55-1 off 14 overs with the Reed fielding a little under par at times in the heat. However the reliable Jack Tidey (10-33-3) then struck three times in quick succession to reduce the visitors to 71-4. Phil Lill (10-24-4) then came on and continued his fine performances with the ball putting Reed well on top with Chorleywood reduced to 125-9 also helped by a good spell by Tom Greaves (10-40-1). Although the last wicket added 32, when Reece Fitzgerald (1-1-1) took the last wicket the final score of 157 all out on a decent track looked well within Reed’s reach. However, the home side got off to an unusually rocky start as James Heslam went for just 5 and then William Heslam (14) and Chris Jackson (0) departed leaving Reed 39-3 off 15 overs. To be fair to Chorleywood their bowling has been performing pretty well all season and they bowled tightly and with a fair bit of seam movement potentially helped by a new ball which had to be swapped after just 14 overs. At this point Reed then began to dig in as required and turn the tide as the inform Greaves (40) and Smith (27) took the score along to 86-3 off 28 overs. Another flurry of wickets then brought Chorleywood back into the [...]

Rain Reduces the Overs but can’t Reduce Reeds Winning Efforts

A heavy rain shower looked like ending Reeds match against Camden Casuals early when it came down in force. It perhaps was a welcome break for Camden who having won the toss were in trouble loosing 4 wickets for just 54 on the board. Matt Giblin found a fantastic line and exploited it picking three of the four to fall. Whilst Josh Conley used his heavy bounce and swing to pin his single victim lbw. Tea having been taken and the rain passed over the players returned to the pitch. The captains agreed that the first innings would be limited to 27 overs, giving them a further 12.4 overs. The second innings would also be reduced down to 25 overs. Although no further wickets would fall Reed contained Camden well with exceptional spells of bowling coming from Jonathan Lankester (4-1-7-0) and George Garrott (4-3-4-0). The visitors finished setting a target of 124. Paul Garrott and Rob Lankester opened Reeds response and quickly made easy runs against the visitors opening quicks. Lankester in particular scored in a classy fashion. Garrott fell with the score on 33 but Marcus Martin the experienced number 3 soon found his feet and scored quickly. He overtook Lankester and made 53 before retiring. Lankester continued in his usual un-flustered manner and also retired having made it to 51. This left George Garrott to knock of the last few runs leaving Reed victors by 6 wickets with ten overs still in hand.

Bowman achieves promotion in first season as Skipper

The 4th XI travelled the short distance to The Meads the Home Ground of Hare Street and Hormead to play Hertford's 5th XI in their penultimate League match of the season. Skipper Lloyd Bowman kept up his recent run of correct coin toss calls and put Hertford into bat. Matt Giblin and Neil Haslam opened the bowling for Reed and immediately began to exert pressure on the two Hertford openers. Runs were hard to come by and Giblin struck first J. Davis giving a catch to Paul Garrott (23-1), Giblin took the wicket of the Hertford Skipper S. Dawson in the same over with no addition to the score. At the other end Haslam bowled his medium pace inswingers and leg cutters passing the bat regularly and was unlucky not to take a couple of wickets as two lofted shots cleared both mid on and mid off. Giblin ended his spell with 9-2-23-2 and Haslam 9-4-15-0, equivalent to maybe a two wicket haul considering how the game was progressing at 41 for 2 off 18 overs. Ollie Mansfield replaced Giblin and Ian Roberts replaced Haslam. Roberts bowled Stemp on the stroke of the drinks break for just 4, 51 for 3 in the 21st over. Mansfield took the wicket of N.Osborne for a duck soon after the resumption, Giblin taking the catch at mid on and Hertford were wobbling at 53 for 4. H.Sewell now came to the crease and together with opener C Ives tried to rebuild the Hertford innings. Sewell struck the ball firmly of both bowlers and made full use of the short square boundaries on both sides of the pitch. They increased the run rate and within six overs had brought up the [...]

Headlines – 22nd / 23rd August

Coming to the conclusion of the League season and we can now congratulate the Seconds and the Fourths for definitely achieving promotion from their respective Divisions. What has to be decided in the final fixtures is whether they go up as Champions. Mathematics & permutations come into the equation. For Marcus Martin’s team, this is their third promotion on the trot. For the Fourth’s, this is the youthful Lloyd Bowman’s first attempt at captaincy. Well-done to all the players representing these teams. On the Green, Chorleywood made 157 all-out with Phil Lill again picking-up 4 wickets, but despite a forty by Tom Greaves and twenties by Stuart Smith and Sean Tidey, the 1st XI reached only 138 in reply. Promotion is just out of reach now but a final charge could put them in third place. Come-on James and the Firsts. The Seconds travelled to Hoddesdon where Mitchell Cooper (80) and Richard Johnson (49) shone with the bat as they rattled up 230 for 8. Hoddesdon ended on 190 for 7 with the wickets shared around. Reed’s next fixture is against Cockfosters, but it is the final match against current second-placed Old Cholmeleians, that should decide the top-spot. In the new structure, top place means a promotion of 2 divisions (and prize money!); second place means a promotion of 1 division, (and NO money). Great stuff Marcus and the Second XI. Down at the Freman Oval, 96 by Rob Willoughby and fifties by Mike Robertson and Pete Baker put the Thirds in a strong position reaching 266 for 5 against Potters Bar. The notorious quick-paced and fast-scoring venue was then the setting for an amazing reply of 267 for 3 in just 37 overs after [...]

Another convincing win for the 1st XI

The 1st XI made it 4 wins in 5 games and moved into 3rd place in the Herts Championship with another convincing win this time over previously 3rd placed Hoddesdon. On a green-ish wicket due to the heavy rain of the previous two days Reed won the toss and elected to bowl. Hoddesdon got off to a decent start though with Hertfordshire batsman Rob Walters looking in good form. However when Jack Tidey (8-2-27) again made an important breakthrough dismissing Walters for 25 the run rate began to slow. However, the home side continued to build and at 102-4 off 29 overs largely thanks to 41 from Leat they had a reasonable platform on a tricky wicket. Alex Mutucumarana (10-1-29) and Toby Fynn (10-0-39) bowled decent spells during this period for Reed. The introduction of spinners Tom Greaves (8-2-39), Phil Lill (10-3-21) and Reece Fitzgerald (4-0-17) then put Reed on top reducing the home side to 144-7 off 42 overs. Lill returning particularly impressive figures. Although a recovery took place to 185-8 in 50 overs a run rate of under 4 runs per over was good news for the Reed run chase. Reeds reply got off to another solid start as James and Will Heslam got through a tricky new ball period to take the score to 35-0 after 8 overs. Although Will Heslam (10) then went looking to score, this brought Greaves to the crease and he immediately looked to punish anything loose as Hoddesdon turned to spin but with a little less control than Reed’s and the powerful Greaves (48) supported by Heslam (33) took Reed along to 101-1 off 22 overs to look well on course for victory. Although Heslam and Greaves then [...]
