Two wins from two for the 1st XI

Across cricket grounds people are talking about Kevin Pieterson, or ‘KP’ as he’s better known, and whether he should be playing for England against New Zealand and Australia this summer. People were distracted from this momentarily on Saturday at the Green as ‘KIP’, or James Heslam as he’s better known, got a magnificent unbeaten hundred to help steer his team to a six wicket win with over 10 overs to spare. West Herts won the toss and elected to bat and despite losing an early wicket, set about building a good platform to get a big score with opener, Marshall (42), and number three, Smith (47), putting on 97 for the second wicket. But while these two were accumulating runs Tom Greaves and Phil Lill were bowling their off spin with a great deal of control on a very good wicket, only going at two or three runs per over. Wickets were shared around with Mitch Cooper ending up with figures of 2 for 38 and Ian Osborne finished with figures of 2 for 27 as West Herts settled for 226 for 8 after their 50 overs. I am not sure what openers Sean Tidey and James Heslam had for tea but it helped them score freely. Tidey played more unconventionally than Heslam but the result was equally as emphatic with boundaries coming at regular intervals. Tidey eventually went for a quick fire 51 off 37 balls including 7 fours and 2 sixes as the opening pair put on 102 for the first wicket inside 13 overs. This took all the pressure out of the Reed run chase and when Alex Mutucumarana came to the crease there was no need to rotate the strike or [...]

A Blue and Gold day as Reed hold their nerve

The 2015 season started in epic fashion for the Sunday friendly XI with a hard fought victory for the hosts over annual rivals Woodcutters. The pleasant weather had drawn a big crowd with several club members bringing their young families to watch. Hopefully this tense tussle will inspire those youngsters to take up the sport. The visiting captain had won the toss and inserted Reed. Veteran batsman Peter Baker and Rob Willoughby started proceedings with a promising opening stand. However, the introduction of the late arriving Bernedes proved devastating. Three cheap wickets fell leaving Reed struggling at 40 for 3. Baker was now batting with young Ben Mansfield. Together they stopped the collapse as Baker proved the perfect mentor and Mansfield a more than able partner. Despite only scoring 4, Mansfield had stood up to some difficult bowling at a pressured period of play. However, the run out of Mansfield followed soon after by the loss of Baker for 33 meant Reed were back on un-even ground. Closing in on drinks Reed had still only made it to 60 with 5 wickets lost. For Marcus J.E. Baker it required a captain’s knock to get Reed to somewhere near a defendable total. To help him in this enterprise was Tom Walsingham, who was up to the challenge. Although boundaries were not easy to come by, singles were taken in abundance. Adding 66 M.J.E. Baker then fell to a smart catch for 41 trying to hit out. Walsingham (39*) held firm and took Reed to a final total of 166 for 8. Lloyd Bowman and Ed Kershaw had both added useful runs but ultimately sacrificed their wickets for the cause. The winters are always a torture waiting [...]

Robertson’s men off to the perfect start

Newly appointed Reed IIIs skipper Michael Robertson saw his side get off to the perfect start in the league with victory away to Berkhamsted IIs. Having lost the toss on a cloudy and chilly day over at Berkhamsted, Robertson’s charges were unsurprisingly invited to bat first by the hosts. 2014 batsman of the year Richard Barlow opened up alongside the mercurial Richard Johnson as Reed got off to a good start against some probing bowling. Both batsmen looked in good touch as they progressed the score past 50, when a mix up in the middle resulted in Barlow being run out. Johnson was then joined by promising all-rounder Jack Caine, who wasted no time in punishing any wayward deliveries as he progressed to a quick fire 18, before he became the first victim of Berkhamsted’s impressive spin pair. Matt Bowles went without troubling the scorers soon after, again offering a catch off of a spinner, as Reed wobbled. Undeterred, Johnson stylishly brought up his half century as skipper Robertson decided attack was the best form of defence up the other end. Robertson, who was given a life on just 1, punished the home bowling anytime they overpitched. Robertson shot to 33 before he was cleaned up by the returning opening bowler. This triggered a collapse in the Reed order, with Johnson going for an excellent and stylish 66, and Maseeh Naeem, Steve Hoy and debutant Aidan Woodcock also falling without adding much to the score. With his side wobbling on 150-8, George Garrott set about counter-attacking his way to a blistering 44 Not Out, ably supported by a stubborn Steve Hughes at the other end. Garrott’s knock looked to be crucial as he dragged Reed’s [...]

Fantastic team effort gets 4th XI off to a flyer!

The 4th XI’s season got off to a flyer with an impressive win at home to Hatch End II's. After losing the toss, Reed were asked to bat as the clouds started to gather over Freman College. Peter Baker looked in great form for his 44 and was well supported by fellow opener Bill Mansfield (14). Two quick wickets brought young debutant George Adam and Zac Conley to the crease. Conley began hitting freely to the boundary from the offset. Whist, Adam (14) played a mature supportive role as the two went about stabilising the innings. After Conley (33) departed, this brought the skipper Lloyd Bowman (27) to the crease, and he carried on from Conley by playing several shots to the boundary before being bowled by (Singh 7-1-25-4) . There were also useful contributions down the order from Ollie Mansfield (9) Joe Graves (8) Ian Roberts (9) before Reed finished their 45 overs on 204-9. Reed’s reply got off to a dream start when opener Joe Graves took two wickets in his first over. He continued to bowl a consistent line throughout his spell and ended up with impressive figures of (6-4-4-3). At the other end, Matt Yates troubled the batsman throughout and was rewarded with two wickets following two catches by Rhodri Hughes. Another wicket fell after a mix up between the batsmen before; the ever dependable Ian Roberts tore through Hatch End’s middle order (4.2-2-8-3). He was also well supported by the returning Neill Haslam (5-3-9-1) who was unlucky to get just the one wicket as Hatch End were bowled out for 49. A fantastic start to the season from the 4th XI , everybody involved can be pleased with their performance [...]

1st XI off to a winning start

Reed 1st XI got their Championship campaign off to a winning start away at Shenley Village. Reed are expecting a hard fought campaign with a number of sides busy with signings over the winter but hope to mount a serious challenge again as they did last season. Presented with a wicket impacted a little by the recent cool and wet weather and in overcast conditions Reed captain James Heslam was disappointed to lose the toss and be put into bat but the notoriously good Shenley wicket still looked decent and spirits were high. Unfortunately the innings got off to the worst possible start when Sean Tidey was run out off the first ball. However, new signing Rich Wharton looked immediately at home and up for the fight. Wharton and Heslam (15) steadied the ship and took the score along to 39-1 off 11 overs. However trying not to let the change bowler settle Heslam looked to go over the top and went caught. When Tom Greaves was out early Reed were suddenly in a spot of bother at 41-3. Nevertheless this brought the man for the situation to the crease Chris Jackson and he and Wharton settled things down nicely. By the time Wharton went for a well-made 55 the innings had recovered to 99-4 off 32 overs. Despite the recovery the innings was in need of acceleration and Alex Mutucamarana returning from a hamstring injury preventing him from playing in the pre-season immediately settled and scored freely. Mutucamarana and Jackson upped the rate and at 165-4 off 42 overs things looked a whole lot better for Reed. Although Mutucamarana then went for an excellent 40 off 30 balls, Mitchell Cooper (15), Phil Lill (9*) [...]

Team Effort Sees Reed to 20/20 Victory

Bank Holiday Monday saw Reed return to competitive action away against a very strong Harpenden side, boasting 5 Hertfordshire County players. Reed went into the Herts 20/20 cup clash as massive underdogs but won the toss and elected to bowl first. Skipper Tom Greaves opened the bowling with Jack Tidey. The spin and pace combination soon paid dividends as Greaves took the wicket of Will Jones, bowled with lovely flighted delivery. Tom Walsingham and Will Stock soon came into the Reed attack and both bowled a good, nagging length which made it tricky to score, forcing loose strokes from the Harpenden middle order. Stock (4-0-14-1) was particularly impressive on his competitive debut in a Reed shirt. He was rewarded with the wicket of Cooper who was bowled all ends up. Dan Blacktopp, fresh from his 40 not out for Hertfordshire against Cambridgeshire on Sunday was the only Harpenden batsmen to reach more than 10 with his agricultural style of play proving rather effective on a slow wicket. When he departed for 37, it was the beginning of the end for Harpenden. Walsingham (3-0-19-3), Mitchell Cooper (3-0-15-1) and Jack Tidey (3-0-17-2) ran through the middle and lower order, including an athletic caught behind by the evergreen 'keeper Tim Tidey; clinching the opportunity to show his credentials for the first eleven keeping spot for the season. Another debutant, Aiden Woodcock (0.5-0-3-1) took the final wicket as Reed bowled Harpenden all out inside 18 overs. The bowling and ground fielding was of the highest quality, emulating their performance at Goatacre in the National Village Cup Semi Final in 2012 - and we all know what happened after that. With a low score to chase, Reed knew that they had plenty of time to build their innings. Richard Wharton and Mitchell Cooper opened the innings and both looked in fine fettle, finding the boundary on 3 occasions [...]

Cooper and Tidey set the tone

On Sunday Reed travelled to a cold and damp Preston. On what looked to be a damp track, skipper Jack Tidey won the toss and chose to bowl; hoping to make the most of overhead conditions and a drying wicket. Tom Walsingham bowled a good line and length in what was another solid spell for the young quick. At 70-1 Preston looked fairly comfortable but some controlled bowling from the likes of Michael Robertson (6-1-22-1) Mitchell Cooper (5-0-25-2) and Phil Lill (8-1-36-2) along with 'keeper Sean Tidey, who chipped in with 4 catches, helped to tie down the Preston middle order. It must be said that George Garrott (7-0-22-1) was the pick of the Reed bowlers and was extremely unlucky not to get more wickets. Walsingham (8-4-12-2) returned with Matt Giblin (5.2-0-33-2) to finish off the Preston tail restricting them to 169. In reply (after a superb tea), Reed wasted no time in making a dent in the target. Sean Tidey and Mitchell Cooper opened up and both found the boundary with ease. Tidey in particular was the aggressor in the early stages of the innings and brought up his 50 in just 19 balls. Cooper soon put his foot on the pedal and blasted his way to 50 in 38 balls. The pair both looked to get the game won and get out of the cold as quickly as possible in what was described as "some of the most clean and refreshing stroke play that had been seen for a long while" by an opposing player!!! The pair put on 151 before Cooper departed for a magnificent 80 from 52 balls (6x4s & 7x6s). Paul Garrott came to the crease and picked up where [...]
