Hoddesdon Home

On another sunny though not so warm May evening, Reed won the toss and batted, and the in form combination of Reed openers Oliver Benham and William Heslam immediately set about compiling a large Reed total. Demonstrating an array of powerful strokes and good running between the wickets the pair put on exactly 100 in just over 10 over's before Benham was retired on 50 not out.Hoddesdon then effected a fightback which saw Pells take 3 wickets (3 -34) including the wicket of Heslam well caught at midwicket for 32 and Deville 6 and Kirby 4 going cheaply bowled and LBW respectively. However from 135 for 3 in the 17th over Reed Captain Sean Tidey launched a last 3 over's assault which saw him race to 47 not out well supported by Lewis Fitzgerald 7 not out. Reed finally posted a mammoth 171 for 3 in their 20 over's.Faced with a very difficult run chase Hoddesdon batted steadily with Harrison 12 and Hitch 10 reaching double figures. However the rest of the side struggled to make any impression as Scott Caine 1 - 6 took his first wicket for Reed and Keiran Willoughby 2 - 6 and William Heslam 2 - 3 proved the most successful of the Reed bowlers. Hoddesdon ended on 65 for 8 leaving Reed wide margin winners by 106 runs.

Hertford Away

Batting first on a bright and sunny evening Hertford, who won the toss and chose to bat, got off to an excellent start on a firm flat Hertford wicket and lightening fast outfield. Barbet and Ray were merciless on any bowling that was short, full or gave them width. Despite the Reed bowlers bowling reasonably tidily Hertford accrued 64 - 0 after 10 overs and progressed to 70-1 before Ray holed out to an excellent catch at deep mid wicket confidently taken by Scott Caine. Carlsson kept up the momentum before falling run out for 9 whilst Manning 14 and the solid Barbett 48 not out saw Hertford to 124 - 2 off their 20 overs. The excellent batting conditions also favoured Reed's opening pair who set about the demanding reply with gusto. William Heslam and Oliver Benham demonstrated an array of fine strokes all around the wicket, punished any loose bowling, and also ran between the wickets exceptionally well. At the halfway stage the pair had amassed 79 - 0 but in the next over Benham fell caught to a good catch for a hard hit 46. Heslam however continued to play a fine innings of cultured strokeplay and, joined by skipper Sean Tidey, took the Reed total to 124 in the 18th over before Heslam had to retire unbeaten on 53. With only one more needed to win Sam Deville struck the required single leaving Tidey on 15 not out and Reed victors by 9 wickets with 13 balls to spare. A thoroughly entertaining match, played in a sporting manner, where the bat dominated the ball on an excellent batting wicket.

Broxbourne Home

Put in to bat on an initially warm and sunny evening Reed got their season off to the worst possible start with the luckless Lewis Fitzgerald needlessly run out off the very first ball without facing. However they picked up after that with William Heslam and Reed Captain Shaun Tidey putting on a brisk 33 before Tidey fell caught at a fly slip for 12 in the 6th over. The fluent Heslam, who demonstrated scoring shots all around the wicket, continued in dominant form and was joined by Sam Deville who punished anything loose with some hard hit boundaries. For Broxbourne Strange and Alyward bowled tidy opening spells followed by Perry and Somiah whose opening overs were also respectable. From the 12th over however Heslam and Deville really cut loose and accelerated the scoring rate with a flurry of fine shots to take Reed to 114 for 2 at the end of the 16th over. At that point Roberts 3 Overs 2 - 13, who proved the most economical of the visiting bowlers, bowled the rampant Heslam for a fine 43 and Lloyd Bowman followed for a first ball duck. Next over Deville fell caught for a hard hit 37 leaving Will Kirby and Matthew Naeem to see Reed through to 130 for 5 off their 20 Overs. In reply Broxbourne got off to a solid start with Roberts and Perry demonstrating an excellent personal understanding and exemplary running between the wickets. Despite the Reed bowling of Fitzgerald, and Heslam being reasonably tight Broxbourne achieved 5 an over for the first 5 overs and were well in the hunt to achieve a win. Reed's fielders had to work hard to make up for being a man [...]

Finals Day

After all the blisteringly hot weather in recent weeks Sunday 19th July proved frustratingly generally overcast with a large number of mercifully mainly light showers peppering the Langleybury ground throughout the day. However none of these ever forced the players from the field in any of the 4 matches completed during the day.Semi Final: Reed v St Albans:The Reed v St Albans pairing lost the toss for pitches and played out their match on the 2nd ground. After the heavy rain of the day before the pitch was damp and slow and the ball would need to be powerfully struck to make it to the boundary over the  slowish outfield with its uphill rise on both sides.St Albans won the toss and not surprisingly asked Reed to bat. As expected the ball proved difficult to get away and against the tight bowling of Bloomfield and Goddard Reed made a cautious start before losing opener Benham LBW to Goddard for 5 with the score 7-1 off 3 overs. Sam Deville joined Will Heslam at the crease and the pair started to build a solid partnership with Heslam in particular playing some powerful and fluent strokes. Deville 9 fell bowled by a ball that kept low at the start of the 12th over with the score on 47. Reed skipper Sean Tidey joined Heslam at the crease but almost immediately suffered a pulled hamstring which caused him to call for a runner and restricted his fluidity. The Reed pair took the score to 72 in the 16th over before Heslam was caught trying to drive Kentish over the top for an excellent 44 off 52 balls faced, including 6 well struck boundaries. 2 further quick wickets saw [...]

Broxbourne Away

On a warm but cloudy evening in front of a good crowd on the excellent Broxboune main square, Reed put Broxbourne in to bat but then proceeded to bowl without the required control and discipline. Roberts 17 and Rider 13 got Broxbourne off to good start and together with generous extras laid the foundation for a solid Broxbourne total. Ollie Benham 4 overs 1 - 16 bowled well but contributions of 22 by Harmer and a solid performance from Perry saw the home side well placed at 88 for 3 after 14 overs. With a key Reed bowler having to leave the field with sickness before beginning his spell, wicket keeper and skipper Sean Tidey had to take off the pads to perform with the ball and bowled a fine 4 over closing spell of 4 overs 2 for 8. Perry 24 not out batted well for Broxbourne but Reed won the battle of the last 5 overs conceding only a further 21 runs to leave a total of 110 to chase for victory. Reeds start got off to a slow start. Strange bowled 3 overs for only 5 runs taking the wicket of the under the weather Deville, whilst at the other end Somiah dismissed Benham for 0 in his first over and after 5 overs Reed were struggling at 14-2. Tidey 7 and Diack 0 came and went and with Reed 41 for 4 after 9 overs the match seemed firmly in Broxbourne's control. However William Heslam remained steadfast and continued to play with a calm authority, and a fine array of shots all around the wicket. Joined by Lewis Fitzgerald with the score at 40 the pair faced the task of scoring 66 to win off the last 10 overs. Heslam started [...]

Bishops Stortford Away

Put in to bat by Reed on a dry but rather less warm evening on a good batting pitch and fast outfield, Bishops Stortford got off to a marvellous start with 41-0 on the board after 5 overs as some wayward Reed bowling was suitably punished. The introduction of Ollie Benham (4 overs 2-20) into the Reed attack stabilised the run rate a little but Kightly 48 and Roach 27 were particularly punishing on anything loose. Lewis Fitzgerald (4 overs 1-22) and Will Heslam (4 Overs 2-28) bowled acceptably but overall the Reed offering leaked 34 extras as Bishops Stortford accrued a sizeable 140 - 6 from their 20 overs. Reeds reply got off to a bad start with the previously prolific Benham and Heslam removed for 0 and 10 respectively both dismissed by the impressive Brady 3 overs 2-2. Reeds fightback was led by skipper Sean Tidey until he was needlessly run out for 17, and then the impressive and hard hitting Sam Deville took the attack to BS until he was compelled to retire on 50* in the 16th over. Hunter Diack 11 proved an admirable partner to Deville but with 44 needed off the last 4 overs Reeds task was too daunting and several wickets fell in the frantic run chase. Scot Caine 12* struck some lusty blows late on to take Reed to a 6th batting point but the BS bowling and fielding was overall much tidier and less generous than Reeds and the BS total of 17 extras (half the 34 conceded by Reed) proved the difference as Reed fell 16 runs short of the required total. A good competitive game played in a generous and exemplary spirit.

Watford Town

Reed 1XI lost their first League game of the season on Saturday as they lost to a spirited Watford Town by 3 wickets. However, despite their loss, Reed remain at the top of Division 2 with only a handful of games remaining. The game began with Reed winning the toss and electing to bat on a warm day at The Green. With a flat wicket in prospect, Watford’s opening bowlers J van de Ee (7.3-1-34-4) toiled without initial success in partnership with K Afridi (5-0-15-1) as Baz Curtis (14) and James Heslam (24) plundered early runs to take the score to 38. It took a special catch for van de Ee at square leg to stop a full blooded pull stroke from Heslam and bring Watford their first wicket. When spinner A Manzoor (22-5-77-5) was introduced to the attack, the situation changed immediately, as Curtis fell caught in the covers. With Chris Jackson (6) at the crease, Reed hoped to settle the situation, but he too fell to a soft caught and bowled dismissal. Phil Frenay (70) came to the crease seeking to settle the ship with Tom Fulk (10), but when Fulk became frustrated, tied by some tight bowling from Manzoor and S Prodger (8-0-26-0), Reed were reeling on 85 for 5. The situation deteriorated again for Reed when Marcus Martin fell to Manzoor for 1.Meanwhile Phil Frenay continued to occupy crease time, and graft before he released some explosive shots that characterise his batting armoury. Assisted by Simon Jackson (44), and subsequently by William Clarke (30), Reed managed to accelerate their score significantly and deal a tough strike to Watford as they accelerated the score over 200 in a short space of time. The reintroduction [...]

WGC II

Reed II’s went down to Welwyn Garden city III’s on Saturday, despite a record breaking partnership and their highest batting score of the season so far.Captain Jason Archer won the toss and elected to bat at Welwyn. Reed sent in openers Ben Bowles and Fergus Martin to build their total, and the opening stance was a slow yet solid. The score was moving towards the half century mark when a mix up left Martin scrambling towards the strikers end, where unfortunately a sharp piece of fielding led to him being run out for 21. This brought new boy Mark King to the crease, and in conjunction with Bowles a new Reed II’s highest 2nd wicket partnership was set.Almost 150 runs were scored before the next wicket went down, with Ben Bowles falling agonisingly short of a half century, on 48 when he was given out LBW. In the mean time King had raced along, and with some wonderful timing and good shot selection had given the WGC bowlers a torrid time. King reached his half century and then his first Reed century in short time.King progressed to 127, before he pulled a hamstring and was forced to retire hurt. Ian Fulk (17) and Chris Shorrock (16 Not Out) added valuable extra runs to the Reed score as they posted what looked to be a a daunting 249-3 in their allotted 53 overs.Reed’s task of defending their total was dealt a blow before it got going when ‘keeper/batsmen King was unable to continue after his hamstring injury, sustained when batting, proved too painful. This meant Reed were left with one man down in the field, and with a part time wicket keeper. Matt Bowles was forced [...]

Ware II

Reed 3rd XI continued their good start to the season with a convincing win over Ware 2nd XI, at our new home ground in Sandon.Captain Peter Baker won the toss and elected to field. It looked like it might be a long afternoon in the field with both of the openers hitting fours over the top of the bowlers heads. However, the break through soon came with Haslam (2-21) clean bowling the opener. The next wicket soon fell with Willoughby taking a catch off Kieran Ward's (3-23) bowling. After the openers had been dismissed the remainder of the wickets were quick to follow with tight swing bowling from Haslam, Ward, and Roberts (5-3) who came on as the first change. Swain also contributed by taking a good catch at Mid- off. Ware were eventually all out for 52 runs.Reed came out to bat before tea had even been delivered to the pavillion. Swain opened and scored an unbeaten 24. Marcus Baker made a valuable contribution scoring a good 16. Heslam then came into help knock the remaining few runs off scoring 9 not out. The runs were knocked off for only 3 wickets. A good all round performance by the whole team especially in the field.

Totteridge

Reed maintained their top-of-the-table position on Saturday as they picked up their fourth successive 30 points in as many games after toppling Totteridge by 68 runs in a wet finish to the game. Reed now have the maximum 120 points from their 4 Herts League games, and are already showing ominous signs of form for the remainder of the season.Having won the toss, skipper James Heslam elected to bat, continuing Reed’s fine run at setting challenging totals. True to form, Heslam (58) and Curtis (80) did not let their side down as the pair brandished some expansive strokes to build a first innings partnership of 147 in only 27 overs. Curtis, Reed 1XI’s leading League run scorer so far this season, played some punishing off and cover drives, whilst Heslam demonstrated some text book shots of his own. Both openers A Sutaira (12-2-57-0) and Siddiqui (8-1-42-0) suffered. It was only when Imran Khan (19-1-78-5) was introduced to the attack, and he found his line, did Totteridge begin to find rewards. Khan urged Heslam into playing a loose stroke to point, and shortly thereafter Curtis fell caught behind of a fine edge. With new batsmen Richard Johnson (0) and Chris Jackson (45) at the crease, Reed hoped to consolidate, but Khan struck again having Johnson, caught at short midwicket, with a lazy shot for a duck.Totteridge looked like they were on top, but a thoughtful innings from both C Jackson and William Clarke (32) steadied the ship, as the pair batted responsibly defending good balls, and punishing poor deliveries to build a partnership of 71 taking the score to 218 in 48 overs. Both Clarke and Jackson fell trying to push the score in the closing [...]
