On Sunday, Reed entertained North Weald at The Green. On a glorious day, North Weald won the toss and elected to field.
Reed’s newly appointed Sunday captain, Tom Greaves, sent out Dom McOmish and James P Day, the latter of which was making their first appearance since a lengthy break from the game. The pair looked to be confident from the outset with Day grooming the ball through the covers early on. McOmish began to take control and dominated the partnership before Day was bowled with the score on 17.
This brought the experienced Peter Baker to the crease. The mixture of youth and experience looked to be paying off and a partnership was building until Baker was unfortunately run out after McOmish had drilled the ball back down the ground and the bowler had finger-tipped the ball on to the stumps.
At 41-2, Mitchell Cooper came in looking to re-build the innings alongside the impressive McOmish. Cooper looked in fine fiddle early on but was deceived by the seam movement of B.Marks (8-0-40-2) as he was bowled all ends up for 8. The game was in the balance when Reed’s Captain Greaves entered proceedings but he and McOmish finally managed to get to grips with the bowling, finding the boundary frequently. The pair put on 35 quickly, before McOmish was bowled by Marks for an impressive 49.
Sean Tidey was the next in and looked to punish the bowling from the outset. Greaves departed for a lusty 31 before Tom Walsingham and S.Tidey came together. The pair ran well and managed to put on 50 with ease before Walsingham fell victim to young S.Archer for a classy 20.
Sean Tidey was joined by brother Jack and the pair were soon hitting the ball cleaning and exploiting any loose deliveries, with Sean in particular finding runs easy to come by. Sean passed fifty and went on to make 79 including 11 fours and 2 sixes in a 75 run partnership.
Jack Tidey hit a few strong blows on his way to 46 not out and was ably supported by youngsters Joe Graves and Jack Hart as Reed registered a total of 261-8 in their 40 overs. B.Marks was the pick of the bowlers for North Weald.
After tea, North Weald set about chasing the total set by Reed but were well restricted by Joe Graves and Jack Hart. Graves (5-1-17-1) struck early, taking the wicket of R.Howarth for 3. The pair managed to restrict Weald to just 38 in their first 10 overs. A fine performance by two players so young.
Reed introduced Jack Tidey (5-2-11-1) and Australian part time bowler Alex Kelly (8-4-11-1) to the attack. Reed were soon rewarded after J.Tidey snared B.Marks for 35 after a fine catch from Dom McOmish. McOmish was soon in the action again, running out R. Plummer for a duck with a superb piece of fielding. Kelly kept it tight and was rewarded for his endeavour bowling S.Allaway for 3.
At 63-4, North Weald never really looked like getting anywhere near Reed’s total. J.Tidey was replaced by Tom Walsingham (6-0-11-2) who impressed yet again taking the wicket of J.Walker for 1.
North Weald were reeling and Mitchell Cooper was given the ball. Cooper soon wrapped up the Weald lower order taking (3-1-6-3). However, it was left to Tom Walsingham to take the final wicket after anothercatch from Dom McOmish, who’s all round game was extremely encouraging.
Reed ran out comfortable winners by 178 runs.
