St. Albans away 2003

Reed maintained their bid for league promotion on Saturday as they played league hopefuls St. Albans away. In possibly Reed's most important league game of the season, the visitors excelled, as the result saw them creep in front of St. Albans II to second place. Yet Hertford II still look dominant in first place as they recorded their 10th win of the 14 league games this season. Winning the toss, Simon Jackson elected to bat, and his decision was proven to be wise, as Tom Fulk (7) and James Heslam (71) gave Reed a solid start against some accurate fast bowling from Richard O'Toole (10-2-29-0) and Australian Andy Williams (12-2-45-4) by building an opening stand of 29. Chris Jackson (14) continued to support Heslam well, until he was superbly stumped off Garofall (20-4-29-4). Richard Jerome (30) also offered some gritty batting against the St. Albans attack, especially from Williams, who in his second spell resorted to bowling a collection of looping bouncers and beamers. Reed ended on 175-8 off their allotted overs, yet St. Albans were always confident that it was an achievable target. The Reed bowlers thought otherwise, despite missing opener Michael Berks due to nuptial arrangements. Jerome (19-12-25-4) and Peter Tidey (20-10-28-3) bowled tightly with the old ball removing the top order, leaving St. Albans reeling on 44 for 6. A selection of rash shots and superb catches by the Reed fielders, particularly Chris Jackson and Peter Tidey who were like panthers in the field. Opener William Clarke (5-2-3-2) took the new ball half way through the innings and helped snatch two quick wickets, yet, with the overs expiring, and the score on 88-9, Reed were unable to dismiss the final to batsman [...]

St. Margaretsbury (h) 2001

Two spireted partnerships set up Reed for a comfortable win against their bogey side. Phillip Frenay (44) and Marcus Martin (25) gave the innings momentum and Chris Welding in tandem with Matt Bowles established a challenging total of 112-3 from 15 overs. Despite constant drizzle and a wet ball, the Reed bowlers tied down the visitors with James Wilson, William Heald, Ian Green and Marcus Martin all claiming wickets as Reed won by 40 runs.

Wibraham (h) 2001

Conrad Wellsread scored a fine unbeaten 60 to steer Reed through this CYC Premier League Match, hitting a 6 and seven 4's. He was well supported by Marcus MArtin (12) and William Heald (20 not out). Indeed heald had already checked Wilbrahams' run dash by taking 2-21 in addition to a run out. The Martin brothers, Marcus with 0-4 and Rupert 1-15, also played their part in this exciting 9 wicket victory.

Wibraham (h) 2001

In their latest Cambridgeshire League game Reed's hostile opening pace attack of ANdrew Wholley (2-3) and James Wilson (1-3) reduced Wilbraham to 7-3 from their eight over stint. Eventually they recovered to 58-8 although Ian Green chipped in with two late wickets Phillip Frenay led Reed's charge, thumping an unbeaten 40 as the home side raced to their winning total inside just 9 overs.

Burwell 2001

A tired Reed side, following their efforts in the Herts Finals the daybefore, wilted in the field against Cambridgeshire's Merrick Fuller (74 not out). However the top order responded well with Conrad Wellstead contributing a forceful 21, Andrew Wholley a belligerent 20, while Chris Welding and Matt Bowles calmly accumulated 16 apiece. However, Burwell bowled tidily to keep Reed 38 runs in arrears.

Finals Day 2001

Reed acquitted themselves well on Saturday in the Herts Cup Finals at Haileybury, but eventually had to settle for fourth place behind the big town clubs of Langlebury, Hemel Hempstead and Letchworth. Andrew Wholly gave them a flying start in the semi-final taking 3-13, but the batting could not respond on a damp wicket with only William Heald (15) and Chris Phillipo witha flashing unbeaten 24 posing a threat to a penetrative Hemel attack. Reed fell 15 runs short of Hemel's 94-6. In the play-off Phillopo struck with the ball, taking 2-23, but Letchworth set a high target on a drying wicket. After early loses, Reed's hopes lay with Conrad Wellstead who smashed a defiant 62 in a partnership with Matt Bowles (19 not out), but 3 run outs in the scramble for runs left Reed 12 runs short of their target. Fourth place is still a fantastic achievement for the small village side.

Hertford (a) – Quarter Final – 2001

An inspirational performance by Chris Phillipo and outstanding fielding by the Reed side upset the form book and took the visitors into the County finals. On the same track that Graham Hick hit his 150 against Herfordhisre last week, the teams found runs hard to come by and the direction of the match turned on two quick thinking athletic run outs by keeper Conrad Wellstead and bowler Andrew Wholley who dismissed the dangerous Hertford openers, both at the non-strikers' end. In fact the last 9 wickets fell for 22 as Reed held some fine catches, notably by the Wilson brothers, Robert and James. However it was Chris Phillipo who instigated the collapse with an inspired spell of 5-9, including a hat-trick to wrap up the innings. Stung by such a low score, County opening fast bowler, David Stevenson, with 4-4 soon had Reed's stumps flying and at 33-7 an away victory seemed unlikely as only Chris Welding (14) withstood the pace. Yet again, though, it was Phillipo (11*) together with the Wilsons, whose lusty blows steered the side home. Reed now face the winners of the other 3 regional ties in the finals at Haileybury on Sunday.

Biddenham 2001

Reed's young Sunday side elected to bat first in this quarter final of the Herts and Beds region tie in the National Village Cup. Reed got off to a sound start with Simon Jackson (10) and Paul Watts (46) putting on 35 for the first wicket. Jackson departed and Ed Blissett soon followed for 3. Watts and richard Robertson (28) added a further sixty run, but the scoring was never quick enough. Reed only reached 158 for 6 off their 40 overs. That was helped by a quick 27 by Robert Willoughby. Biddenham's batting, however, was far too good for the Reed bowlers as they proceeded to knock the runs off in 28 overs for the loss of only one wicket with Fone scoring 73 and Richardson 55, both undefeated.

Aston 2001

Aston batted first in this Sunday friendly game and scored steadily, until they opened up and scored 50 off the final three overs taking them to 193-6. Reed got off to a poor start with Conrad Wellstead caught behind for a duck. However, Paul Watts was joined by Ed Blissett and they put on 101 in 25 overs. Reed were still well behind the run rate, with eleven overs to go. Richard Robertson and Richard Barlow came together needing 92 for victory. Where they were seperated nine overs later they had put on 89 runs and Reed needed three to win. Increadibly Reed contrieved to lose six wickets for two runs until Clive Collins settled the matter with one ball to go, leaving Reed the victors by one wicket!
